The Trail of Tears represents a harrowing chapter in American history, with over 100,000 Native Americans from the Five Civilized Tribes forcibly relocated. The Cherokee called this forced migration “Nunahi–Duna–Dlo–Hilu–I.” Stripped of their homeland, approximately 4,000 Cherokee perished along the journey due to starvation, exposure, and disease. In 1838, U.S. troops moved in to enforce the removal despite a Supreme Court ruling in favor of the Cherokee. This dark episode highlights the struggles faced by Indigenous peoples in the face of federal policies and disregard for their rights.
