Major landforms and climates of Central America 3 Major Landform Regions • Mountainous Core (pg.238) • Mtns run length of C.A. • Cause Transportation problems • 2 Climate Zones exist here • 3k-6k above sea level= year round spring, good for growing corn/coffee • Above 6k= cold climate w/frequent frosts, few crops can grow

Major landforms and climates of Central America 3 Major Landform Regions • Pacific Coastal Plains (pg.238) • Located on Western Edge of C.A. • Climates • Tropical Wet and Dry • Can only depend on Rainfall in the summer • Land • Very fertile soil caused by lava flow and ash deposits from Volcanoes high above the plain

People and Cultures of Central America • Home to many different ethnic groups • Tends to be concentrated locations b/c of mtns. • Indians • Longest tenured, larges # in Guatemala • Europeans/Mestizos • Largest European settlement in Costa Rica (90%) • Mestizos=mix of European/Indian • Large populations in El Salvador/Nicaragua

Social/Economic Conditions leading to Political Conflict • Most Central American are poor Farmers w/little political power • Wealthiest (Europeans and Mestizos) • Plantation owners and dominate govt. • Small but growing middle class • Causes of Conflict • Shortage of Farmland • Govt. support of only the wealthy • Power in hands of wealthy

Major physical characteristics of Caribbean Islands • 3 Island Groups • Great/Lesser Antilles, Bahamas • Greater Antilles (pretty mountainous) • Island Formation by volcanic mtns pushed up from ocean floor • Lesser Antilles • Island Formation result of volcanic activity • Bahamas • Island formation result of accumulation of coral polyps making it a flatter coral island • Marine Climate • Affected by sear and wind, heavy rainfall on windward side, less on leeward side.

  15. Ethnic Roots of Caribbean Culture • Descendents of Enslaved Africans • Example is their form of folk music • Similar stories to that American slaves of 1800s • Descendents of Asians Immigrants • Slavery abolished, making Asian immigrants large source of labor for region

Political/Economic Status of islands today • Large % of population lives in independent countries • Many are still linked to US, or European countries • Economic Activities • Agriculture • B/C of fertile soil in volcanic islands; much of worlds sugar, bananas, coconuts, rice, etc produced • Many others activities related to the manufacturing of these goods • Tourism • B/C of natural beauty, good tourist location • Much of $$ from it remains overseas though

  17. Why is migration Common • Migration has historically been common in Caribbean Islands for 2 Reasons • Poor political Situations • Military Dictators, oppression, econ. Conditions • Job opportunities • Much like that in Mexico • Plantations are major employers but only employ large #s for shorter amounts of time
