Why a New Learning Management System? Blackboard 8 is: • Outdated and has been replaced by Blackboard • Expensive for basic services • Not expandable or adaptable • Does not integrate with other systems • Will cease to be supported • Does not support new initiatives • Is not compatible with the Strategic Plan
Why now and why the rush? • Contract expiration • Blackboard 8 will soon not be supported • New requirements for our campus • New options on the market • Coordinated moves with other initiatives and projects • Need to be cost effective • Need to better meet needs of teachers and students
What is the plan? Needs and Requirements assessment: • Requirements of faculty • Requirements for Institutional Research and Assessment • Requirement for ITS support • Needs of the students • Fitting in with the Strategic Plan of the college
What is the process for faculty needs and requirements assessment? • Open forums to discuss LMS and gather input from faculty concerning requirements • Online tool for faculty to submit their input electronically • View demonstrations of most viable LMS products • Submit comments and concerns on each/any • Formal assessment of final list by team of faculty, senior staff and ITS.
What is the timeline for this process? • March 1-5: Open Forums • March Faculty Meeting: Announce Final List • Early April: Demo, sandboxes, formal evaluations • Mid May: Announce decision • Summer 2010: Begin to convert courses, train faculty and offer courses in new LMS or Bb8 • Summer 2011: All courses taught in new LMS
Who are the members of this project team? • ACPC is the representative body of the faculty • ITS Project team Chuck Ray (Project Manager), Olga Lapczak (Assoc. Director ITS) and Paul Monachino (Instructional Technology Specialist) • Representatives from Student Development and the Office of Academic Affairs
