  1. Time, Inc. vs. Firestone & Hutchinson vs Proxmire By: Bo Bauman, Ciara Pepper, and Maxwell Hartman, Hour 4

  2. Time, Inc. vs. Firestone In this case, there was a ton of controversy. This was a libel case, which is where a public figure tries to defame, or bring down, another public figure, or private citizen. This case involved Russell Firestone, a popular icon, trying to bring down and destroy the social status and reputation of his wife, Mary Alice Firestone.

  3. The Reason for Defamation Mary Alice Firestone, Russell Firestone's wife. was the one who filed for a divorce. Mr. Firestone, who was obviously very upset, made the false comments that she was cheating and committing adultery, which were the untruthful statements intended to bring down the reputation of his wife.

  4. How the World Changed In conclusion, this led to Congress making a change to the 1st and 14th amendments saying that Congress will give protection to any one citizen, and that false, defamatory statements would now be illegal in the Journalism world.

  5. Hutchinson vs. Proxmire This was just like Time Inc. vs Proxmire, except not as popular. In this case, a company by the name of Proxmire sued Mr. Hutchinson of giving a "Golden Fleece" award to these certain agencies who funded and awarded him, when these agencies certainly deserved this award. This case also went towards the Defamatory Statements and Freedom of Speech in the Journalism Word as well.

  6. Conclusion In conclusion, you see that both of these cases are now definitely affecting the journalism world.
