3. Great plains The tribes are located in the middle of North America. It’s very flat, very grassy, with gently rolling hills. In the Great Plains the Indians and American bison (their buffalo's) roamed the land, the two most important tribes in this area are the Mandan's and Kiowas. 4. Mandans Housing The Mandan's have lodges that are circular, warm, big, and made of sod. In the lodges you get one room per family but you still get your own beds. Sixty people can fit in one lodge plus pets. Hunting In there tribe hunting is very important its like life or death. Before they can begin hunting every man and boy have to now there job and need to blend in. When they start hunting they don’t just attack right away, they surround and frighten first. Gathering Gathering things are very important to the Mandan’s just like hunting is to them. They need them for trading and for food sources to, only women and children gather plants and crops and other things from the forest. Crops they are allowed to gather are beans, corn, squash, and sunflower. Tools tools that the Mandan’s made came from buffalo clothes, weapons, water bottles, and blankets are all made from buffalo. 5. Kiowas Kiowas In the southern great plains is were the Kiowas lived they are nomads. Because the Kiowas never stayed in one place, they had no rich valleys or forest. In the tribe they don’t farm or live in villages, but depend on the buffalos like the Mandan’s. The Kiowas were selfish By claiming certain areas even when they moved to a different area. buffalo uses There buffalo uses are as important as they are to the Mandan's. The nomads make easy shelter called tepee’s. they made this with buffalo skin, with a pole to hold it up, they also leave a hole to let out smoke. To make fire they use buffalo droppings , all of there beds, blankets, clothes, and of course food are made from buffalo’s. Travois They use carriers that they called travois ( truh.voy) to carry goods. Where the Kiowa's live there isn't much wood so they used the poles from the tepee’s. Horses dragged the poles ( kind of like a carrier). chief If a man would want to become chief they would have to prove himself to his people. To become chief they have to prove that he is a good hunter, leader, and most of the tribe must trust him. In this tribe women are not allowed to be chief. Subgroups Nomads who don’t follow the ways of the people may be free to live on there own. Sometimes a tribe would often have many subgroups .Subgroups are made of a family who woks together.
