  3. Writings • What we know comes from writing discovered in the 1800’s • Writings were written in Hieroglyphics • From the writings we know a little about songs Egyptians sang and stories they told

  4. Old Kingdom • Old Kingdom 2600-2100 B.C. • Pharaohs controlled government that built pyramids • Old Kingdom crashed-local rulers broke away and led the country to Civil War

  5. Middle Kingdom • 2100-1700 B.C. • New Pharaohs • Foreigners took over Northern Egypt

  6. New Kingdom • 1500-1000 B.C. • Militant pharaohs took control of all of Egypt and neighboring areas • Brought in gold, wood, ebony, and ivory • Riches were used to build tombs located in the Valley of the Kings • Defeated by Alexander the Great in 300 B.C.
