SPECIFIC AND STRATEGIC • Straightforward and clearly written • Addresses something that is of importance to the district • Aligned to mission, vision or strategic plan • Likely to have a significant impact Key Question: How is this goal going to contribute to our strategic plan goals?
MEASURABLE • How will you know when you’ve met your goal? • What measure will help you determine if performance has improved? • Are you measuring quantity, quality, or impact? • How will progress be measured?
ACTION-ORIENTED • Use of active versus passive verbs • Who is doing what? • Words to avoid:

Sample SMART Goals • In support of the district’s transition to MA’s Revised Curriculum Frameworks (the Common Core) during the 2012-2013 school year, I will help to ensure that all instructional staff are prepared to design and/or implement new standards-based units of instruction consisting of well-structured lessons and appropriate assessments through the appropriate allocation of resources targeting (1) professional development on the Common Core, (2) curriculum materials, and (3) technology in support of data collection and analysis for all staff. • Increase by 25% the amount of funds received during FY 2011 for payments online at mySchoolBucks.com from the amount received in FY 2010.
Sample Smart Goals • Collaborate with Purchasing on best procurement procedures, to include p‐card and direct pays, and assist Purchasing on the language of the communication to the end users, thus decreasing purchase orders issued by 10% by 6/30/11. Included will be reviewing and updating purchasing categories to make it easier for users to select the correct categories and associated object codes; revising the chart of accounts and providing definitions for use of object codes; and implementing a method to ensure all purchases are coded correctly. • Update Finance and Budget policies and procedures to reflect current practices and to make them easier to follow and more understandable to our audience. This is a two year goal that will update 50% of the Finance and Budget policies and procedures by 6/30/11 and the remaining 50% by 6/30/12.
Your Assignment • Each table has a Standard, Indicator, and Element number assigned • Your job as a team is to discuss this particular element and develop a professional practice goal for that element • Hold each other accountable and push each other to make the goal SMART • Continue to apply the SMART test to the goals • Once your goal has been completed, write it on the chart paper and post it somewhere on the wall • At breaks, peruse the SMART goals • These goals will be collected and posted on the MASBO website
