  2. Reflective Introduction • The saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words”. Pictures can convey emotions, through faces and colors, and they can be an accurate representation of a real world object. However, many can also be left open to interpretation, allowing each viewer to come up with their own idea of what the picture is representing. In this way, images can garner more unique ideas and more active reflection than a purely written piece could on its own. As such, it makes sense that images would be a valuable resource in examining information. • Innovation, imagination, and creativity are the reasons we are where we are today. Creativity helps to inspire new ideas and concepts to further our everyday impacts on life, and imagination helps us to create new things that did not previously exist or do things that were thought to be impossible. Innovation is the creation of new techniques and objects that help to make life easier, make things more affordable, and improve the living quality of everyone. Without these aspects of human thinking, we would likely still be sitting around a campfire, grunting and living in caves. • Through doing this project, I gained a broader understanding of what innovation, imagination, and creativity mean. Previously, I had only though of technology as being innovative and creative. However, through seeing what other people thought and the pictures that others brought in, I can now see things like architecture and art as being innovative. • I would like the audience to see my pictures as representing innovation through technology, as I believe that technology is a large part of the innovative genre. I would also like them to see the wide range of applications that technology can be applied to, which I believe to be a factor of creativity, as well as how the technology makes what had been thought to be impossible now possible, which is a large factor of imagination.

  3. Reflective Introduction Cont. • The images I selected relate to me in a large way, as I am a computer science major hoping to go into the career world as a robotics programmer. I am especially interested in the humanoid platform and the modular robotics. The humanoid platform is currently just a concept, but if it could be realized, I think it could dramatically change the way we go about our daily lives. The modular robotics are in the experimental phase, but if they can be realized and produced, then they could change the way we produce machines by making them of smaller components all working together. • I think that the Google Glass was most helpful to me in learning more about innovation, imagination, and creativity because it shows the use of existing technology in a new way to create a wearable display for your cell phone. However, it has also given me insight into how innovation, imagination, and creativity can sometimes be rejected. The Google Glass has already been banned in many places, although it hasn’t been made commercially available, because it has been seen as a possible invasion of privacy, as it could be used to take pictures or video without others knowing it. • I think that the paradigm assessments helped me to understand the images the most, because they helped me to look deeper into the image and the background behind the objects in the images. Because of the paradigm assessments, I looked into the objects and technologies behind the photos more than I might of if I had just seen the images at a quick glace online. • I feel like the genre morphs caused the images to lose something in the translation. I chose to do the word clouds with descriptions of the pictures, and in doing so, I think that the images lost the ability to inspire some of the imagination that seeing the actual object could.

  6. 3D Printer Genre Morph • Image Title: 3D Printer • Original Genre: Photograph • Revised Genre: Word Cloud • Description of New Genre/New Piece: The image has been transformed into a word cloud, where a description has been written for the image and processed, so that the words used most often appear largest, and those that were used less often appear smaller. • Explanation of New Genre Choice/New Piece: I chose to do a word cloud for the image because I thought that it would create a visually interesting piece that would draw your attention to the details of the original photograph. • Explanation of How New Genre/Piece Differs from Original: This new piece differs from the original in that it no longer actually depicts the 3d printer. It instead offers a textual description of the modular robotics. • Message Changes? Yes or No? How so?: I think that the image loses its ability to trigger the viewer’s imagination, as they can no longer actually see the 3D printer. The viewer is now forced to see the description of the object as I saw it, and therefore is now somewhat forced to see it from my point of view, and as a result, may be unable to see how the printer would work as a real-world machine. • New Genre/Piece Caption (if needed): Description posted into Wordle: • This is a 3D printer that prints objects in 3D using a lower melting-point plastic called PLA. The PLA is extruded through a heated nozzle, much like the way a hot glue gun works, onto a plastic bed. The printer works by printing one layer of the model at a time, and building the model layer by layer. The PLA is heated just enough to where it can be extruded into the shape needed, but since it has a low melting point, it is able to melt the layers enough when it adds a new one to fuse the layers into one cohesive object.

  10. Google Glass Paradim • P (Piece): This photograph was originally published as a part of an article describing the debut of the Google Glass. This article was originally published online on November 7th, 2012 to TechRadar by Stuart Houghton. • A (Agent): The article in which this photo was contained written by Stuart Houghton, and the photo is credited to Google. Stuart has written seven articles on TechRadar and can be contacted through the TechRadar website. • R (Receiver): This article is targeted towards the more tech-savvy and technology interested people. Most people would not be willing to wear a piece of technology such as this, unless they were very much into their technology. I am definitely included in the target audience, as I have gone so far as to create my own device with similar capabilities to the Google Glass. As a result, I may be somewhat biased towards the creation and use of these devices in the consumer market. • A (Agenda): The author presents the opinion that the Google Glass is a great idea, but it is not quite developed enough to be worth the cost and the trouble that is required to get one. He justifies this by showing how he Glass only has a select number of features, but requires a lottery system in order to buy one. • D (Demands): The article encourages research and development into these kinds of devices, in order to make them less expensive and more useful in every day, consumer lives. If this can be achieved, then it could lead to a whole new era in mobile communication. If not, the concept of wearable technology may become just a fad. • I (Inquiries): I would like to know more about the technology behind the Google Glass. What about it makes it so expensive, if I was able to build a similar device for under $100? I think this article is trying to encourage people to watch what happens with the development of the Glass, but to hold out on buying one until the price comes down and the technology becomes more useful. • G (Gains): I gained a better understanding of the features of the Google Glass, and how difficult it is to obtain one. I think that the article is attempting to keep people from buying the Google Glass a t the current time, because it emphasizes that the Glass is very expensive and does not contain many features. • M (Motivators): The author was inspired to create the piece as there has been a lot of hype recently regarding the Google Glass, and the thought that the Glass is going to somehow revolutionize the mobile communications market.

  12. Humanoid Platform Paradigm • P (Piece): This photo was originally published on the Nordstrom Robotics Humanoid Platform website. The website is designed to give information about a robotic prototype being made to help with all aspects of human life. • A (Agent): The website was created by the Nordstrom Robotics company, whose team consists of several robotics specialists and designers. They can be contacted through a form on their website. • R (Receiver): The primary audience for the website are people who are more on the wealthy side, as well as businesses, as the company is looking for sponsors and investors to back their project. I don’t exactly fit into the target audience, as I am on a college student budget, however, I am very interested in the use of robotics in all fields, so this project is very exciting for me. This excitement, however, may cause me to lean more toward helping forward the project’s creation. • A (Agenda): The website is trying to promote the project in a way that would inspire and convince people to help back the company. It justifies this by promising a finished product that will more than satisfy any customer’s needs. • D (Demands): The website urges the funding and backing of the Humanoid Platform project, so that they can get a finished product. If they cannot meet their funding requirements, the robot will not end up being built. • I (Inquiries): I would love to know more about the robot itself, such as how it will be programmed and whether the company plans on making a cheaper, consumer version of the robot. • G (Gains): I gained the knowledge that there are people and companies out there trying their best to get these robots built and into the everyday world. This website inspired me to look deeper into the technologies behind these kind of robots. • M (Motivators): The company was inspired by the increase in production and home automation, and so started going about creating a versatile robot that would be able to replicate human actions and perform human duties; the Humanoid Platform.

The viewer is now forced to see the description of the object as I saw it, and therefore is now somewhat forced to see it from my point of view. • New Genre/Piece Caption (if needed): Description posted into Wordle: • This is a modular robot which is able to transform from a four-legged walker into a snake-like line in order to traverse different types of terrain. It is made up of many small components, each of which are entirely identical. They use a gps location system in order to determine where each of the individual components are, and each unit has the ability to move on its own in order to join up with other units to form a larger system. Each unit has a black and a white component, which are connected to each other by a double-hinge to allow them to rotate independent of each other. Both the white and the black component have hooking systems that allow the unit to connect to other units in order to form larger machines.
