  2. Terrie’s Tip Smoking causes immediate damage to your body. For Terrie, it gave her throat cancer. You can quit.

  3. Background Founded in 1946, the Center for Disease Control was created to inform people to protect their health through health promotion, prevention of disease, injury, and preparedness for new health.

  4. Ethos/Credibility What makes the image credible?

  5. The Centers for Disease Control at the bottom of the image makes the picture credible.

  6. Logos What is the logical appeal of the image?

  7. Smoking causes throat cancer, which can cause you to lose your voice and force you to talk through a voice box. This fact is presented at the bottom of the page and is also indirectly stated through the text in the picture.

  8. Pathos What is the emotional appeal of the picture?

  9. This advertisement makes the audience feel sympathetic for the woman because she has to talk through a voice box to the people she loves instead of through her natural voice. It also ties people to the emotions of their mother or grandmother due to the motherly figure of the woman in the picture.

  10. Audience Who is this ad intended to?

  11. This ad is directed toward people who smoke and those that have loved ones who smoke .

  12. Foreground What is the foreground?

  13. The foreground of the picture is the woman and the text. They are also the foci of the picture. Having them in the front of the picture puts more emphasis on what the ad is trying to convey about smoking.

  14. Background What is in the background of the photo?

  15. In the background is a picture of a child, probably a grandson or another loved one. This is significant because those are the loved ones who wish to still hear the voice of the woman. The picture frame in the background also tugs on a sympathetic emotion for the child and also for the woman because it gives another example of a loved one.

  16. Balance How is this ad proportionally balanced?

  17. The ad is balanced with the woman and her voice box stoma on the left side of the ad and the large text on the right side.

  18. Inclusion What does the ad specifically include?

  19. It specifically includes pictures of those that love the woman in the ad. This is significant because it relates the text to actual people in the woman’s life.
