  1. Visual Rhetoric Trisha Poynter

  2. Background Information The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is an organization founded in 1961 to raise awareness about our environment and how to protect it. Their mission is to “halt and reverse the destruction of our environment.” This picture was published in April of 2007 to show how our rain forest are slowly degrading because of deforestation.

  3. Who is the intended audience?

  4. The intended audience of the ad is anyone who doesn’t understand the full effects of deforestation and how harmful it really is to our environment and ecosystems.

  5. What is the significance of the colors in the ad?

  6. The colors that stick out the most are the dark blue and grey storm clouds in the background. It creates a gloomy feel to the ad which makes you see how catastrophic deforestation is.

  7. What is juxtaposed?

  8. The forest before deforestation and after deforestation is being compared. Before you see a green and flourishing rain forest but when you look at the other half of the advertisement you see the forest as its depleted of plant and animal life.

  9. What is the focus of this ad?

  10. The focus of this advertisement is Tarzan. You see him swinging through the air as he is about to fall onto the ground. This shows not only how deforestation is bad but how it can hurt the life of animals that live in the rainforest and people like Tarzan.

  11. What is the ethical appeal?

  12. The ethical appeal of the ad would be the WWF panda logo in the bottom right hand corner of the ad. The World Wildlife Fund is a reputable organization that has been around for 50 years to be a voice in the protection of our environment and endangered species across the world.

  13. What is the logical appeal?

  14. The logical appeal of the ad would be that deforestation is more common than we think and it is happening all around us. It is very devastating and the only for it to be stopped is if we stand up for our environment.

  15. What is the emotional appeal?

  16. The emotional appeal of the ad would be to feel sympathy for Tarzan and the homes of the other species in the rainforest that were destroyed due to deforestation.
