What was the Estates General ? • Large scale meetings held time to time. • Chosen delegates from various social classes presented their grievances to their ruler. • Rulers promised to provide remedies or reforms.
Powers Of Estates General • The right to deny new tax appropriations. • Wrote their grievances in notebooks known as cahiers. • Estates General lost power in the 1400s and 1500s. • Last meeting took place in 1614. • 160 years before Louis XVI became king. • In 1788 a meeting was called by Louis XVI.
Powers Continued …. • Wanted to change the tax system. • Tried to increase taxes on 3rd Estate.
Grievances Of the Three Estates • List of grievances expected the king to consider it in exchange for his tax initiative. • Complied in various towns across the realm. • Typical requests were regular meetings with the Estates General , lower taxes , and freedom of the press. • Wanted a more equal justice system.
Grievances In the Third Estate from Paris • “liberty of the press must be granted , on condition that authors sign their manuscripts , that the printers name shall appear , and that both shall be responsible for the consequences of publication.” • “crime alone and not the social standing of the criminal should determine the sentence.”
