Windows Server Licensing Scenarios Determining the Number of Licenses Needed Edition Comparison by Running Instances
Path For Growth Adding additional standard licenses allows customers to add capacity as needed at a constant price per instance. Option 1: Stack Standard Licenses Customers with Standard edition licenses can attach multiple licenses to a single server to increase virtualization rights. Each license will increase virtualization rights by two virtual machines. 6 VMs 4 VMs 2 VMs License License License License License License Add one license to the server for a total for two licenses Add one license to the server for a total for three licenses
Software Assurance Migration Path Software Assurance customers receive grants upon agreement renewal, but are entitled to use the granted product upon its availability. License Grants at SA Renewal *Based on current SA benefit as of April 1st, 2012. If the number of core licenses required exceeds the minimum eligibility defined above, the customer can take an inventory to document their actual core license needs. (Core license needs are equivalent to the cores in a physical server multiplied by the core factor for that server).
Prior to renewing MCCA, conduct a self-inventory using Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit (MAP) System Center Configuration Manager Meet with your Account Team Discuss self-inventory and current licensing Review existing Software Assurance and understand license grants. (e.g. 1 Windows Enterprise Edition Server = 2 Standard Edition Servers) Determine cost effective way to cover any identified licensing needs Next steps
