  1. IS 205: GROUP PRESENTATION Distance Learning and Collaboration Technologies

  2. Introduction • Distance learning is way of learning remotely without being in regular face-to-face contact with an instructor in the classroom. • It is a formalized teaching and learning system specifically designed to be carried out remotely by using electronic communication.

  3. Introduction • It occurs when there is a separation between the instructor and the student, usually due to geographical or time concerns that prevent the student from attending an on-campus course. • Often electronic means are used to bridge this gap hence sometimes referred to as e-learning.

  4. Advantages of Distance Learning • The main advantage of distance learning is that it allows you to fit your learning around your work and home life. • Learner can usually set his or her own pace of study. • It often costs less than full-time studies.

  5. Advantages (continues…..) • It is learner’s decision as to when and where he or studies. • It is not constrained by geographic considerations. • Learner gains same useful, transferable skills as their full-time counterparts.

  6. Disadvantages of Distance Learning • The main disadvantage is that learner will not enjoy the sociable or lively atmosphere of being on a campus.

  7. DL Collaboration Technologies Popular distance learning technologies include: • Voice-centered technology, such as CD or MP3 recordings or Webcasts. • Video technology, such as instructional videos, DVDs, and interactive videoconferencing. • Computer-centered technology delivered over the Internet or corporate intranet.

  8. Applications Suitable for DL • Blackboard. It is a platform that for education that functions much like the blackboard in traditional classrooms. • Coursera. It is an online portal that hosts courses from universities around the world.

  9. Applications Suitable for DL • Canvas: It is an “open source” software that seeks to integrate tools and programs that people already know how to use such as Google Docs or YouTube. • Other applications include Schoology, FaceTime and Google Plus Hangouts to mention the few.

  10. Conceptual Framework for DL

  11. Conceptual Framework for DL.. • The figure above shows conceptual framework of an e-learning environment. When student searches for teaching material, the search Engine selects the Learning Objects(LO) best suited to the student’s needs using the Learning Object Metadata(LOM) metadata

  12. Conceptual Framework for DL… • collected in the Learning Object Repository(LRO), and student profile. The adaptation engine defines how to modify the file manifest according to student’s cognitive styles.Teaching strategies are implemented in the Knowledge Base (KB).adapting agent calculate the level of changes

  13. Conceptual Framework for DL…. • possible and select the most adaptable option, after doing this, it transfers the file manifest to Learning Models(LMS) where it will be presented to the student.
