RECREATION • Cape Patterson is a place where people view it as a Gymnasium. The gymnasium effect is such as a place to participate in recreational activity e.g. surfing, beach sports and snorkelling. There are a lot more types of recreational activities you can do there. People also view the land as a place to protect. There is a lot of history in cape Patterson and its surrounding areas. The land was once roamed by the Bunurong tribe, they have left a lot of stories with this particular part of land. • Positive impacts: • There are a lot of positive impacts to the environment. These include fenced off areas to protect certain natural environments. Tourism is a positive impact in this area as it allows people to understand the history and life of this place. These areas are all mapped out with tracks for people to stay on. This helps the environment by not damaging native plants and shrubs from the human footprint. • Negative impacts: • Over use of the areas are a major concern. The tracks and built path ways are starting to wear down. There is a lot of erosion being caused from weather and humans constantly walking on these tracks. • People do try and keep the environment in one piece, because they use it for fitness and to be active.
Conservation • These efforts of conservation can be seen in many areas of Cape Patterson. Most areas are along the coastal parts of this town. These efforts keep people from ruining what we have left of the natural environment. They build tracks, fence off areas and have guides to tell you all about these areas. Most of the people that are involved in these conservation set ups volunteer them selves to this. • People participate in protecting the environment because they want the natural environment well what is left of it to be protected so other people get to experience the natural species of flora and fauna. • The positive impacts of conservation areas include protection of native species of flora and fauna. Burn offs also help to re-generate the natural species of flora. • Negative impacts; areas get over used, tracks wear down from erosion and bad weather.
Primary industries • Cape Patterson has many primary industries these include farming, Wonthaggi desalination plant and wind farming. People view the land as a way of making money when it comes to farming. But with the wind farms it is a way to provide energy in a more efficient way. They view it as a resource to provide peoples needs. • Impacts are positive and negative. Positive impacts are it’s a making a living, providing a new and improved energy efficiency. • Negative impacts include; wind farms killing the birds, desal plant letting out green house gases and harming the o zone layer not to mention changing the environment for sea life.
Tourism practices • Cape Patterson itself is a big tourist place. It attracts a variety of people for surfing and snorkelling. They view the land as one of the last natural places they can go to.
