  3. What is Color? Element of Art- Also known as “HUE”

  4. Primary and Secondary • 3 Primary colors cannot be mixed from other colors • 3 Secondary colors are mixed from the primary colors

  5. PRIMARY COLORS Definition: A primary color cannot be created by mixing any other colors together. There are 3 primary colors.They are RED, BLUE, and YELLOW.

  6. PRIMARY COLORS Primary colors are equal distances from each other on the color wheel.

  7. Secondary ColorsDefinition: A secondary color is made by mixing two primary colors together. There are 3 secondary colors. They are orange, green, and violet. Can you guess what primary colors make orange? Green? Violet?

  8. How do we mix primary colors to create secondary colors? Violet = Blue and Red Green= Blue and Yellow Orange= Red and Yellow

  9. Tertiary Colors Also known as “intermediate” colors are created by Mixing a Primary color and a secondary color in various amounts

  10. Intermediate or tertiary colors: There are 6 tertiary colors. They are: Yellow-orange, red violet, blue-violet, blue-green, yellow-green and red-orange.

  12. Notes: Color Scheme A group of colors specifically related on the color wheel. Famous painter, Vincent van Gogh often used color schemes to paint his scenes. Vincent van Gogh, Starry Night

  13. Warm colors Reds, Oranges, YellowsWreds, Oraarm colors are red, orange and yellow. This family of colors is called warm because they remind you of warm things like the sun or fire.

  14. Cool colorsBlues, Greens, PurplesCool colors are green, blue and violet (purple). This family of colors is called cool because they remind you of cool things like a cool forest or a cold lake. This painting by Claude Monet uses cool colors to suggest a quiet pond.

  21. Values of Color Tint (of color) – A color produced by mixing white with a hue. Shade (of color) – A color produced by mixing black with a color.
