  1. METEOROLOGY Chapter 5 Objective 5-5

  2. Objective • Objective 5-5 • Explain the formation of local, small-scale circulations such as monsoons, land-sea breezes, and mountain-valley breezes.

  3. Land and Sea Breezes • Coastlines provide a sharp boundary between land and sea. • The temperature of land goes through a relatively large daily cycle compared to the sea. • This temperature difference causes a thermal circulation to develop.

  5. Land Breezes http://www.coolweather.co.uk/htdocs/small.htm

  6. Mountain-Valley Winds • Valley winds form during the day when the land warms and the air in contact with it flows up-slope. • Mountain winds form at night when the slope is cooler and the air in contact with it becomes cold and dense, causing it to flow down-slope.

  8. Valley Winds http://www.coolweather.co.uk/htdocs/small.htm

  9. Monsoons • Monsoons are seasonal changes in the winds over a larger area due to thermal circulation. • The monsoon circulation is most evident over Asia and India. • The Santa Ana winds in southern California are an example of this type of circulation.
