  1. Plants Requirements • Sunlight • Carbon dioxide • Nutrients and • minerals • Water • Correct soil PH • Space to grow • wind • Animals • Insects

  2. Geographical location and climate • Geographical location and climate contain plant spread • Some species are adoptable to different climate and environment • These species once moved to different location • My spread invasively and

  3. Invasive plant species • Plants that can grow wide variety of conditions and once given opportunity can quickly establish in new locations • What characteristics do invasive species have in common ? • Is there a plant in your neighborhood you think is everywhere

  4. Invasive plant characteristics • Grows fast • Cover large area of land • Has more then one method of spreading • Vegetatively • By seed dispersion • Produce large amount of seeds

  5. What do invasive plants do • Kill other plants by covering and shielding from sunlight • Deplete soil nutritient • Render forest inaccessible • Animals and birds are affected as source of food is limited by invasive plant taking over • Hard to control • Herbicide used to control also kills good plants and pollutes soil and water • cost a lot of money

  6. Invasive plants in atlanta Kudzu Native to eastern Asia introduced to America in mid 1800s to control soil erosion as well as for ornamental Grows fast ,climbs trees and bushes Kills trees by cutting sunlight

  7. Kudzu engulfed trees

  8. Chinese privet introduced into America in 1952 as an ornamental and hedge shrub Privet produces a lot of seeds which are dispersed by birds helping it spread to new areas Privet also spread vegitatively from roots It is hard to get red off

  9. English ivy Was introduced to America by Early European immigrants in mid 1700s as foliage, ornamental and for soil erosion control Like kudzu it covers trees as well as grows horizontally taking over huge areas It spreads vegetatively and by seed dispersion

  10. How are plants identified • Plants differ in leaf forms such as • Shape • Texture • Size • Leaf margins • Leaf arrangements • Plants differ size, stem , flowers ,color etc

  11. Why plant identification matter? • Identification based on leaf forms can be used find invasive plants • assess the areas affected • Plan the best method of controlling • For the next lecture , we will curry out digital leaf sampling as well as field leaf sampling • We will set up quadrates in the school field • count and collect weed samples and use it for class presentation assignment
