  3. While Germany builds military and economic strength… • Italy Struggles to get it together! Frequent warfare Foreign Rule • Italy, like Germany responds to Napoleon with NATIONALISTIC fever. Mazzini establishes “Young Italy” Nationalists harken back to the glory of Rome! Italians want UNITY! Well, eventually! “Hitler Youth” Yikes!

  4. Italian City states • After the fall of Rome, Italy was divided into small independent states… I can’t see the boot Shut up Snooky, it’s Italy!

  5. How can they unite if they are divided? Outsiders see weakness! Strong leaders see opportunity! Austria sees a threat! Rebellion! Nationalism!! • Most Italians were loyal to their LOCAL identities! • Residents of Florence thought of themselves as “Tuscans” • People of Venice, Venetians • Folks from Naples, Neapolitans • Etc!

  6. Once again! • It was difficult to Unite Italy because she was being so difficult! • The people were deeply tied to their local identities. • PS…same language, same culture!! OY! Italy! You’ve GOT to pull yourself together!

  10. But wait! • Why did it work to make Italy a Kingdom? Stability = economic growth! Strong central gov’t = stability It is always about Money!!

  11. Don’t forget about The Congress of Vienna! • Prince Metternich (Austria) would NOT tolerate a free Italy (or any other European nation) • Revolution fever had grown into weariness • People wanted to return to stability and prosperity • Did we mention it is always about the money?

  12. By 1870 Italy is a Unified Nation Industry and prosperity would follow but the population explosion caused many to migrate to the U.S. There is danger ahead for Italy! World War 1 is right around the corner!
