  1. So you wana jump Camera? Are you crazy?

  2. Things to consider. • Do you meet the requirements • Are you willing to spend the money? • What gear? • Flying the camera. • New E.Ps to learn • New considerations

  3. U.S.P.A REQUIRMENTS(irm./sims) • USPA REQUIRES 200 JUMPS. • TO JUMP WITH A TANDEM OR AFF YOU NEED 300 JUMPS, 50 CAMERA JUMPS. • You need the permission of your CCI for the equipment to be used. • You need permission from the instructor.

  4. GEAR. • CAMERA? $400 • HELMET $400 • JUMP SUIT. $500 • AUDIBLE ALARM and skylight. • CANON STILLS CAMERA. • A SMOOTH OPENING CANOPY. • NEW HARNESS WITHOUT AN RSL/ SKYHOOK. • Weight belt that you can ditch for water jump drills

  5. What gear. • Why so much gear? Each piece of gear has a job, the helmet jumpsuit weight belt and so on will help you…. • Dress for success. Change fall rates. With the wing suit you can move in and out of range rapidly • Adjust your body. Not your head, a camera man will keep his head still and fly to the position he needs, the helmet, suit and belt help this.

  6. New Emergency procedures. • In the aircraft fasten your helmet to something, preferably your head. • On exit find a position that gives you the maximum view. • Don’t get to close to the subject on opening. • Don’t get above the subject a pilot chute in the face hurts. • For camera people the MINIMUM OPENING ALTITUDE is 3500ft. • The safest opening altitude is when you see them track away,

  7. New Emergency procedures. • Disconnect the RSL or Skyhook. • Malfunction? Cutaway arch. • If the main canopy is entangled with the helmet cut away the helmet. • Pull silver. • DO NOT TRACK. You may end up over somebody under your mal and freefall into them. • You have more gear so you need more space and time.

  8. Under canopy. • You loose peripheral vision. • Look up down left and right throughout the flight. • Build your self some time and space. • Don’t try to video a canopy as it lands, or flies they don’t know you are there and will take you out.

  9. Videots guide • Remember to turn on the camera. • Don’t ask or expect the subject / tandem AFF or formation to help you. They have more important things to do. Like survive. • Learn to work independent of the subject. • Fly the body NOT your head. • You work for the subject.

  10. Ok freefall video exits. I try to watch the dirt dive and exit to get a feel for the best position to be in

  11. The exit • Exit strategy. • Leave with the formation • If you miss the count peel off after them • Get back as far as you can on the rail. • This will increase your peripheral vision

  12. My ideal position. • Filling the frame • With digital cameras you don’t need to be with your back to the sun, but you do need to be at a good angle.

  13. My ideal position. • I use wide angle lenses • If you are close you can see, anticipate, react, and position yourself faster.

  14. Working with the sun. • You are not working with the sun you are working with shadow and light. • Put yourself were YOU need to be for the best effect and with luck the subject will help you.

  15. Working with shadow

  16. Even though this shot is into the sun, by setting the camera to manual you still get the shot you want.

  17. This shot on automatic shows how a good photo turns out bad

  18. Too low and shadowed. This shot looks good but I was just a hair out of place as the arm is causing shadow over the eyes.

  19. Look for opportunities

  20. Cool pic yes or is it? This shot by a friend of mine shows me! And a cool chick but the shot is ruined by the vignette From the box or lens

  21. Moving the camera • On the ground pause move record • In the air avoid shake. • Transition. By sliding or moving up and down try to keep the subject in the frame. • Keep awareness of what is going on around you, look out for swoopers. • Don’t fight or rush to the slot stay high and back and move down as it builds. This gives better awareness and vision, it helps keep you out of trouble.

  22. Rules for tandem. • Never ever ever get above the tandem drogue. EVER! • When the tandem opens you get a trap door and swing so back away when you see the wave off. • The most important thing here is the tandem master, you can ask for turns and light checks, and things, we will say yes (we lie) • Fly smooth and remember its all about the passenger not the T/M OR YOU!.

  23. RULES FOR AFF • STAY TO THE SIDE WERE POSSIBLE • DON’T GET ABOVE THE STUDENT • IN FRONT WILL DISTRACT THE STUDENT. • BE READY FOR THE UNEXPECTED AS THIS IS THE NORM WITH AFF. • FOLLOW BEHIND ON EXIT OR YOU WILL GET GHOSTED.
