Reasons for a Mission Statement in Advocacy • Gives meaning to the students and facilitator’s actions • Clarifies everyone’s role and provides clarity • Provides clear communication and purpose (personal and academic) • Creates motivation to provide emotional support • Creates action instead of reaction

Mission Statement Requirements • Should reflect a set of values, principles, goals, and a sense of purpose • Make sure these values and principles reflect the guide your advocacy room wants to follow. • Find a common group amongst the students and the facilitator. • Create a statement that would help not only Advocacy be more effective but a mission that would improve the climate and culture of the school and the world. • Create a statement that would promote inspiration. 2. Assure that your Advocacy group uses at least five words from the “Mission Statement Word List” (see slide 6). 3. Begin brainstorming ideas- you may select to make smaller groups and then combine the collaborative ideas into one. 4. After the entire Advocacy group has agreed on the mission statement, you will write your mission statement on either a poster or anchor chart paper. 5. The poster should include the advocacy teacher’s name and a nickname created by the advocacy group. The nickname should be based on a university’s mascot. Example: Mr. Smith’s Panthers or Mrs. Morales’ Griffins. And of course, the poster should include the mission statement created. 6. Finally, after the Mission Statement poster is created, every student in advocacy and teacher must sign the poster.
