27-30 November 2007, Tarragona, Spain Quality Control of Observations
27-30 November 2007, Tarragona, Spain Quality Control Methods of Meteorological Observations Levels of quality control: • Real-time • Non real-time • Manual Real-time Quality Control Procedures • 35 MS are connected online to HNMS • First level real-time quality control done at the station • On-site quality control procedures include: • Missing values check • Syntax control • Cross error checking (limit check) • Observations: • Are transmitted automatically and stored to an auxiliary database • Data stored permanently after they pass successfully quality control
27-30 November 2007, Tarragona, Spain Non real-time Quality Control SomeMS are connected with HNMS by • telex • phone • mail QC checks at the end of every month for RT and NRT Data include • Range and limit check-based on statistical limits • Step check for parameter value changes • Internal consistency checks for >= 2 variables
27-30 November 2007, Tarragona, Spain Human Quality Control • HQC: final phase of QC • Examination of erroneous or suspicious data • Based on generated error lists • Correction done by experienced observers • Final data passed HQC successfully stored in a permanent database
27-30 November 2007, Tarragona, Spain Technical Characteristics of DB: • Empress version 8.62 • HP-UX Server (model RX5670) • 4 processors • 8 GB memory • 2 disks (mirrored) • 0.5TB capacity • MARS2 (Meteorological Archiving Retrieval System) Features: • RDBMS • JDBC • ODBC • DSQL • C++ • SPSS scripts • 15 clients
Future Planning
27-30 November 2007, Tarragona, Spain In progress • By the end of 2008 • 17newAWS will be incorporated into existing network • 35stations will be converted to hybrid (semi-automatic) • Newly-purchased automated instruments will replace old meteorological instruments • Inventory of data
- 36 existing stations will be connected to existing telecommunication system- New computer system and software will be installed - METSTATION, already running on 35 sites, will be extended - Small databases will be developed at stations - Improvement of quality control procedures (1st level RT QC at station level)- Measurement data will be inputted automatically to HNMS database- Upgrading of existing database- Climatological database will be developed - A web-based interface will be developed with generation of Climatological data reports capabilities Plans for 2008-2009
27-30 November 2007, Tarragona, Spain By 2012 Observation network will • be expanded to include • 140 automatic weather stations • semi-automatic (hybrid) only stations • use automatic meteorological instruments New weather stations will be established for • wind • radiation measurements
What we need • Help in data rescue techniques • Tested systems did yield good results • 25% success rate-scanned documents/Papyrus Software • perhaps focus in preserving images of data records in picture (jpg) format? • Participate in specialized workgroups to gain know-how • Allocate specialized personnel for data rescue activities? (Data inventory activities underway) • Establish a Data Resque Department? (Already have a Quality Control Department just for verification of weather forecasts) • Training and international collaborations • Ideas 27-30 November 2007, Tarragona, Spain
