  4. Agenda • Explain need for institutional online support (LOL and TOL) • Demonstrate the UCF model for faculty • Teaching Online (TOL) • If time…Learning Online (LOL) • Collaborate with attendees and gain feedback on making the sites more interactive and successful

  5. History of online learning at UCF • 1996 • First online course • Distance Education Committee • Goals • Improved quality of learning • Increased access • Prototype • Systematic • Scalable • Sustainable • Evaluation

  6. Need for institutional support • Large student population of over 40,000 • Over 600 active WebCT accounts in Spring, 2003 • UCF currently uses over 2400 WebCT accounts • 24,700 students (or 65%) use WebCT in online courses • Over 1 million ‘hits’ per day on the server housing WebCT

  7. UCF Online Initiative The three primary support structures that have proven to bolster and enhance the UCF online initiative: • Institutional support • Faculty support • Learner support

  8. Learning Online (LOL) Student Support Where It All Began • Student Orientation • First LOL website • Pegasus Disc • Tutorials • Software/plug-ins • Campus information • Connection to campus network

  9. Learning Online (LOL) • Learning Online web site • Compliment the Pegasus Disc • Focus on three different areas • Students curious about online learning • Students registered for online learning • Student resources for online learning

  11. Teaching Online (TOL) History of old support and reasons for TOL • Too many websites…too many servers • No starting point. • Faculty wanting to teach online did not know where to begin. • Confused faculty. • No central location for ALL teaching online support services.

Teaching Online (TOL) Stages and Process for developing TOL • IDs brainstorm faculty needs at biweekly team meeting • IDs (Instructional Designers) discuss confusion expressed by faculty when trying to locate all the online support services • IDs decide to create web site to support faculty teaching online and select project manager from ID team (Bill Phillips)

Teaching Online (TOL) • Develop Website • Meetings, meetings, meetings • Work with teams / individuals involved • Instructional Design team – content • Digital Media team – graphics • Techrangers– coding support • Video Convergence team – video testimonials • New Media team – interactive multimedia orientation
