  2. Look for clues! • If an article such as a, an, the appears, a noun follows someplace after! • Possessive words describe nouns—my, your, his, her, our, their

  3. Remember… • Words can disguise themselves! • Is your word acting as a person, place, thing, or idea? • Some words can be different parts of speech depending on how they are used!

  4. For example… • I have a burn! (noun) • It burned me badly! (verb) • Let’s go for a swim. (noun) • She swims everyday. (verb)

  9. Common or Proper Nouns are either COMMON or PROPER. COMMON nouns name any one of a group of persons, places, things, or ideas. PROPER nouns name a particular person, place, thing, or idea. Proper nouns always begin with a CAPITAL LETTER.

  11. Concrete Nouns Nouns that you can perceive with your senses (see, hear, touch, taste, smell) are called CONCRETE NOUNS.

  12. Abstract Nouns There are some nouns that you cannot see, hear, taste, touch, or smell. These are the nouns that are ideas, qualities, feelings, or characteristics. One person’s idea of a particular noun may be different than another person’s idea.

  13. Concrete – a noun that you can see, hear, feel, taste or touch Abstract – a noun that is a feeling, a quality, or a characteristic idea? love? Eiffel Tower? smoke? justice? religion? Concrete or Abstract

  14. Compound Noun • A single noun made up of more than one word. • Common compound nouns can be found in the dictionary. • peanut butter • notebook • exchange student • light bulb • school bus

  15. Compound Nouns can be: • Single Word: classroom, birdcage • Hyphenated Word: vice-principal, jack-in-the-box • Two or more words: ice cream, jumping jack

  16. Collective Nouns: • A group (but still in singular form) • swarm • jury • class • committee • team • unit

  17. Nouns: • Common or Proper? • Concrete or Abstract? (some can be collective or compound)
