It is measured in units of carbon dioxide • Contributions to carbon footprint: • Car emissions • Public transportation • Electricity • Heating your house • Cooling your house • Eating & drinking • Clothes & personal items • Recreational activities Homeowners can save money by just using energy efficient appliances

Energy Efficient Appliances • Horizontal axis washers consume 1/3 less hot water. • Reduces water consumption from 40 to 24 gallons per load and save as much as 7,000 gallons of water per year. • Washers on the market today can cut your energy use by as much as 70 percent. • They can save you more than $850 in water and detergent over the life of the machine

  6. Energy Efficient Appliances • Fluorescent light bulbs use 75 percent less energy than a ordinary light bulb • By just changing your light bulbs you can save about $6 a year in electricity costs and can save more than $40 over its lifetime

Energy Efficient Appliances • Dishwashers energy-efficient motors and use sensors to determine the length of the wash cycle and the water temperature needed to do the job. • The newest Energy Star dishwashers are 25 percent more efficient than the minimum federal standards. Replacing a pre-1994 dishwasher with an Energy Star model can save $25 a year on utility costs. • Choose a dishwasher with a "light wash" or "energy-saving" wash cycle. It uses less water and operates for a shorter period of time for dishes that are just slightly soiled. • Look for dishwashers that have an energy-saving cycle that allows dishes to be air-dried with circulation fans, rather than heat-dried with energy-wasting heating coils.
