  2. What is a carbon footprint? • Measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide • The carbon footprint is a subset of the ecological footprint, which includes all human demands on the biosphere. • It is meant to be useful for individuals, nations and organizations to conceptualize their personal impact in contributing to global warming.

  3. Reducing Your Carbon Footprint • Where possible, changing to another electricity company to switch to buying electricity from renewable sources (from wind turbines, solar panels or hydro electrical plants or from nuclear power plants.) • Plant edibles including trees, vines, bushes, and ground-covers. • Use recycled wood chips to keep the weeds down, retain moisture, and prevent erosion • Use natural predators rather than pesticides which harm the environment. • Install water barrels to collect rain water from troughs. Place a small bucket in your sink to collect water when washing produce. Use this water in the garden.

  4. Help save while driving • Anticipate road conditions and drive smoothly, avoiding sharp acceleration and heavy braking. This saves fuel and reduces accident rates. • Plan your journeys to avoid congestion, road works and getting lost. • Drive away immediately when starting from cold - idling to heat the engine wastes fuel and causes rapid engine wear. • If you're stuck in a jam, switch the engine off if you expect to be there for more than a minute or two. Cutting the engine will save fuel and reduce emissions.

  5. Help save in home • The location of your fridge can make a difference in how energy efficient it is. Make sure it is out of direct sunlight and not close to the oven. Keeping it against an outside wall will help the heat it generates escape easily, and always make sure that there is a few inches’ space all around the fridge so that air can circulate. • Have a shower instead of a bath, which uses far less energy and water. • Switch to energy saving light bulbs, when your old bulbs break. They last around 10 times longer than ordinary light bulbs; they will save you money and come in loads of different styles.

  6. Other ways to save energy • Turn off your computer monitor when you leave the room • Open up - if you have windows you can open, use them to intelligently save energy. • Only use the lights you need. Turn off lights in unused rooms. • If you know someone and you go to the same place carpool.
