  2. Articles An articles is a determiner which indicates the coming of a nouns.

  3. There are two kinds of articles. • Definite articles - The • Indefinite articles – a / an

  4. The definite article “The” point out the person or thing. It refer to a particular person or thing. It can be used with both singular and plural nouns and also with uncountable nouns.

  5. The pen which I bought yesterday is an inferior one. • The food that I had at the party was very tasty. • He is the doctor who treats us.

  6. The indefinite articles A or An means one and used only with singular countable nouns. • A doctor came. (we don’t know the person) • The doctor came. (we know the person)

  7. “A” is used Before the word beginning with a consonant letter. • A boy • A man • A dog • A house

  8. Before a word beginning with a consonant sound. • A university (here is pronounces as “Yuniversity”) • A uniform (here is pronounces as “Yuniform”) • A unicorn (“yunicorn”) • A one eyed person (“won eyed”)

  9. Before a singular countable noun when it is mentioned for the first time. • He bought a pen. (Later we have to say “the pen he bought…………) • There is a man and a monkey in the room. • The man is singing and the monkey is dancing.

  10. Before a proper noun to point out an unfamiliar person. • A Perera came to see you. ( A person called perera) Before “half” when “half” follows a whole number. • Two and a half kilos.

  11. “An” used Before a word begins with a vowel sound. • An apple • An umbrella • An elephant • An orange

  12. Before a mute (silent) “h” • An honest man • An hour

  13. Before individual letters spoken with a vowel sound. • He is an M.P. • He is a Member of parliament.

  14. “The” is used With superlative degree of adjective. • Piyal is the tallest boy in our class. When we speak of particular person or thing. • The pen which I bought yesterday is an inferior one. • The teachers of our school are hard working.

  15. When a singular noun stands for the whole class. • The rich must help the poor. • The lion is the king of beasts.

  16. Before the geographical terms. • The Mahaweli • The Indian ocean • The Red sea

  17. Before the names of books and newspapers. • The Mahawansa • The Times of Ceylon • The Daily News

  18. Before common nouns which are names of things unique of their kind. • The earth • The sun • The moon • The sky

  19. Before the name of races or nations. • The Buddhists • The Hindus • The Sinhalese • The Tamils

  20. Omission of the article Before proper nouns • Sri Lanka is an agricultural country. • Gandhi was a great leader. • January is the first month of the year.

  21. Before Material and Abstract nouns. • Iron is a useful metal. • Honesty is the best policy.

  22. Before a common noun used in a general sense. • Man is a social animal. • What kind of fruit is it?

  23. In phrases consisting of a preposition followed by its object. • On foot • In hand • By sea • By bus • At noon
