  3. JCC Facts … • Founded in 1928 as Jackson Junior College • Extension Centers in Adrian and Hillsdale • Approximately 10,000 students • 693 total employees • 92 full time faculty • 300 part-time faculty

Security Protocol • In case of a medical emergency while in your classroom-call 911, and JCC Security • If you are concerned about a safety issue with an unstable or hostile student, call JCC security at ext. 8620, or 796-8620 from a non campus phone • If you get an voice mail—LEAVE A MESSAGE—your message goes directly to JCC security personnel. They will respond directly. • Emergency procedures are posted in every classroom

  14. JCC Email • You are expected to use JCC email to keep in touch with students, colleagues, supervisors, college announcements, news and events. • Groupware Training is available on Adjunct Learning Days or through one on one sessions with IT staff when needed. • Adjunct Newsletters are sent to your JCC email account on a weekly basis—check your mail often—three times a week is suggested

  16. Making Copies for your classroom • Print requests for instructional materials can be made at the Copy Center by • Dropping off your request at the Copy Center with a print request form • Via email to CopyCenter@jccmi.edu • Allow at least 48 hours whenever possible. • Please do not use copy machines in your building to make more than 10 copies. • Please do not send students to your building secretary to make copies for you. • PLAN AHEAD

  17. Reporting Absences • It is vital for you to inform the college of any classroom absence. • Not notifying JCC of missing a class is grounds for dismissal with ineligibility for rehire. • If you are unable to attend a class you must call the main office of your department and tell the secretary as soon as possible. The building secretary will take steps to inform students of the canceled class • If you know before hand that you will be absent, attempt to find a substitute. Contact your lead faculty and/or department chair about qualified substitutes

Absence Reporting Form • You must fill out an absence form and submit it with a detailed plan on how and where you will make up the class time within 14 days of your absence. • Fill out one form for each class you have missed. • Example: If Mary is teaching 3 courses on any given day, and she is sick for one day—she needs to fill out a form for EACH CLASS SHE MISSED

Syllabi • A legal contract between you and your students • Contains details of what students can expect of you and what you are expecting from the students • All JCC faculty are required to submit an electronic copy of each course syllabus to the Academic Dean’s office by the end of the first week of classes. • Email syllabi to: MarlerKarenL@jccmi.edu • Sample syllabi and a syllabus template are available on the Academic Deans webpage at http://www.jccmi.edu/administration/deans/syllabi.htm

HQV Grades • Help, Quit, Verify or HQV grades, are an important tool to help JCC • track student performance • help struggling students • Collect important data required for federal reporting and financial aid • HQV grades • alert the Center for Student Success of students who may need assistance. • may save a student from collecting financial debt • Your diligence in reporting students who have not attended your classes is very important.

Reporting HQV Grades • A HQV tutorial is available on the Adjunct Resources web page under Grading • HQV reporting dates are also posted on the Adjunct Resources web page • Reminders for HQV grade reporting are emailed to your JCC email address – please watch for them • Record HQV grades on e-services—under intermediate/midterm headings • If you have questions about HQV just email me: zicafooamyj@jccmi.edu

  22. E-Services • Found at the bottom of JCC web pages, e-services is located in the lower left hand corner. E-services holds many important functions for adjunct faculty. • Online Grading—both HQV and final grades • My class rosters: print your class rosters from this page • My stipends: pay information is available here

Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) • 10 ADOs have been identified as necessary skill areas students should possess when completing general education requirements at JCC • ADO rubrics have been developed (developing and proficient) for each course to measure and assess • Departments determined ADOs for each course • Adjuncts are provided ADO information and rubrics for courses by lead faculty or chair • ADOs must be addressed in your syllabi • For more information on Associate Degree Outcomes go to Assessment and Associate Degree Outcomes on the Academic Deans web pages

ADOs & Assessment • ADOs and Assessment Brochure • You will record how many students successfully met your success criteria. • For example: If you have 20 students on your class roster, and 17 students attempted an assignment, only 13 students met the criteria you would report 13 out of 17. • You will list changes you will make the next time you teach the course to improve student outcomes.

  28. FERPA Law • Federal Law • Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act • Schools must have written permission to release any information from a student’s record • You cannot inform a parent, sibling, friend, spouse, etc of a student’s academic record, attendance, or progress

Grades and Incompletes • Grades are due 48 hours after your last class • Enter grades on E-Services • Enter grades in numerical form 4.0-0.5 • Enter a 0.0 as E—not numerical • Incomplete grades are for medical emergencies for students who has completed at least ¾ of the course with a 3.0 or higher • Incomplete grade forms must be filed before you give an incomplete

Withdraw dates • Withdraw dates vary depending on class start times • Withdraw dates my be found on the academic calendar on the JCC Dean’s Page • Refunds are based on time of withdrawal and reasons for withdrawal • Do not tell a student to withdraw from your course—simply advise them of their grade and refer them to an academic counselor and financial aid representative • Withdrawals can affect financial aid, entrance into academic programs, and insurance.

Student opinion surveys… • Evaluations of you by your students completed in the eleventh week (11) in the semester • Building secretary or staff will give them to you • Computer class rooms complete online evaluations. Link comes to your JCC email • Allow 10-15 minutes of class time to complete. • Leave the room when students are completing the evaluation • Ask a responsible student to hand deliver the paper forms to the building secretary upon completion

Inside the classroom • You set the tone, pace and environment • Remember your students are often nervous and don’t know what to expect in college course-sometimes you are their first college instructor—their first impression of college may begin with you. • Some JCC students are learning to be college students • Many are first generation college students • Many are from marginalized populations

Non traditional & returning students • Nervous and afraid about future and being a student again • Bring depth and breath to your classroom • Tend to ask many questions and want to bond with the instructor • Some have been forced to redirect their lives through education • Some have not been in a classroom in over 20 years and may not have enjoyed their past educational experiences

Needs of all students • They need to know you care about them and their education. • They want a fair, safe classroom • They want to be heard and understood • They want your feedback quickly and often • They want encouragement balanced with constructive feedback • They want you to see them as a whole person

As an adjunct faculty member • Nobody expects you to know everything • Ask for help when you need it • Ask for the resources you need to meet your student’s needs • You cannot plan too much • Mistakes are normal—EVERYONE MAKES THEM • JCC is committed to professional development for all faculty members

Keeping yourself informed • Check your JCC email at least once a day • Visit the Adjunct Faculty Resources page regularly • Explore the JCC website • Read the bulletin board posted in faculty office areas • Spend some time in your building adjunct faculty office—get to know some of your colleagues • Check for JCC mailings in your snail mail • Attend JCC events when you can—be visible
