  2. FACTS • Target Population of It’s YoUR CHOICE for specific schools • Lincoln (719) • Johnson (489) • Harllee (591) • 1900 students from 6th-8th grade will participate. • New Schools will be added this school year

Pregnancy Statistics • As of January 2010, Florida has the nations 6th highest rate of pregnancy. • Thirty four percent of young women become pregnant at least once before the age of 20. • Nearly half of all 15-19 year olds have had sex once. • The younger the girl the more likely her partner is older.

  4. Statistics continued.. • Many causes encourage teen pregnancy.. • Low self esteem • Lack of supervision • Cultural competencies • Peer pressure • Need to be loved • Misinformation about the reproduction process

  5. Statistics continued… • Teen parenthood is linked to negative consequences • Mothers drop out of school • Remain unmarried • Live in poverty • Single parent • Experience abuse and neglect • Enter welfare system

In Manatee County • In 2008 there were 190 pregnancies to girls aged 13-17, ranking Manatee as the 11th highest county in the state. • Targeted zip codes 34203, 4205, 34207, 34208, 34221 with a total of 153 pregnancies. • In 2010 51 girls aged 13-16 have given birth in Manatee County in the first quarter.
