Learn how to effectively structure your paragraphs in critical essays using the P.Q.E.R. method. This approach ensures that you present clear points, incorporate relevant quotes, explain their significance, and relate them back to your main argument. Each paragraph, except for the introduction and conclusion, should follow this format to maintain clarity and coherence. Avoid repetitive phrases and ensure your content directly addresses the essay question while reinforcing your topic sentence. Mastering this technique will enhance your essay's analytical depth.

Quote • Provide 2 quotes from the text. • The quotes should be relevant to the essay question. • The quotes should support your topic sentence. • Put your quotes in context.
Explain • Explain what your quote shows. • Analyse and evaluate the techniques used. What is the impact? How effective? • Make sure that everything you say is relevant to the essay question AND is relevant to your topic sentence. • Try to mention how the quote relates to the main concerns (theme and message) of the text.
Relate • Sum up what you have been discussing in the paragraph. • Show how it relates to part two of the essay question.
