  3. 1st Battle of Bull Run • Thomas (Stonewall) Jackson got his nickname during this battle. WHY? • Confederate troops countercharged and let out the “REBEL YELL” • Confederate victory • Many in the South thought the war was over • It shocked the North • Lincoln got rid of the militia and called for 500,000 regular army troops

  4. Shiloh • Major battle in the western theater of war • Fought in southwestern Tennessee • Union led by Grant • Confederacy led by Johnston and Beauregard • Confederacy attacked the North April 6th and forced the Union to retreat

  5. Shiloh • During the night, Union reinforcements arrived and the Confederate army was driven away the next morning.
