Who? • Walter Ulyate Max Sisulu • Born in the in the village of Outubeni in the Engcobo distruct of the Transkei on 18 May 1912. • He was born the same year the “old” ANC was formed. • Sisulu’s father was a white man. • Sisulu was raised by his mother and was finically supported by his uncle. • He attended an Anglican missionary institute but left grade 6 at the age of 15 after his uncle died. • In the 1930s Walter Sisulu had several jobs: gold miner, domestic worker, factory hand, kitchen worker. • To help support his family he was forced to seek work in Johannesburg in a diary. • Date of Death: 5 May 2003, Johannesburg

What? • Walter Sisulu was an influential anti-aparthied activist and co-founder of the African national Congress Youth League. • He was a brilliant political networker and had a prominent planning role in the militant UmKhontoweSizwe. • In the early 1940s he developed a talent for leadership and organization and was awarded with an executive position in the Transvaal (A former province in Northeastern South Africa) division of the ANC. • He was a leader of the Youth League along with Mandela and Tambo. • In 1949 Sisulu was elected as secretary general of the ANC.

WhEN ? • Walter Sisulu formally joined the ANC in 1949. • The Anit- Aparthied movement began in 1948 – 1993. • After he joined the ANC he met Nelson Mandela who referred him for employment with a lawyer in Johannesburg. He helped Mandela complete his law degree by partially funding him. The two became friends. In 1944, with Mandela and Oliver Tambo he founded the ANC Youth League and was the league's treasurer. That was how he got recognized by the world.

  6. Why ? • Walter Sisulu dedicated his life to the ANC and the Anti- Apartheid movement because of the extreme racial discrimination that the ‘Colored’ people in South Africa had to endure. • Black people we not even considered to be South Africa. • They worked at factories and mostly were labor workers with a small salary. • Walter Sisulu believed in equality and in Human rights.

  7. How? • Walter Sisulu was a political leader. He was a major contributing factor to the Youth League which thrived to achieve equality and to ban racial discrimination. • His speeches influenced many people because they talked about equality and unity. • He was also a played a prominent role in the ANC.

  8. CONCLUSION Considering the previous information, it can be concluded that Walter Sisulu was a great political leader that stopped racial discrimination and helped achieve equality. He is a role model that most South Africans look up to today because of his dedication to the Anit- Apartheid movement. He thrived to make his dreams come true and to guarantee a better future for the people of South Africa.
