Plate tectonics is the theory explaining the movement of Earth’s lithospheric plates, which are rigid slabs of rock that float on the semi-fluid asthenosphere. Alfred Wegener's continental drift theory provides evidence for this concept, showcasing how continents like Pangaea gradually separated. Various plate boundaries include divergent, convergent, and strike-slip, each with unique movement patterns. For instance, divergent boundaries, found along mid-ocean ridges, cause plates to move apart, while convergent boundaries, near trenches, bring plates together. Fossils and geological formations offer further insight into this dynamic system.
