Overview of Orangethorpe: • Student enrollment: 850 • Pre-K through 6th grade • Title I- 80% on free and reduce lunch • 60% of students designated ELL • Program improvement: year 5 • Unique Multiage Program serves 100 students representing 24 different districts • 3 SDC classes: mild to moderate

What was the most challenging part of implementing Brain Based Direct Instruction? • “It was difficult following the FAST Framework while delivering appropriate pacing.” • Example: Delivering a clean model sandwich: students listening attentively (not taking notes or sharing during teacher modeling) • “At first, I found it challenging because I was learning how to plan the lesson with the FAST Framework.”

What was the most challenging part of implementing Brain Based Direct Instruction? • “I struggled with planning a lesson of the same standard with my grade level team, because each individual had their own perception of how the standard should be taught.” • “Once our grade level was able to determine if the standard was procedural or declarative, we were better able to plan together.”

What was the most challenging part of implementing Brain Based Direct Instruction? • “I’m a new teacher, I teach 5 year olds in kindergarten, I found it difficult to keep my students attention while I was delivering the Big Idea and Model Sandwich” • “I’ve been teaching for 17 years and it was automatic in some cases. Now my teaching is more intentional. I am thinking about the hook, pacing, big idea…”

I was able to hear other ideas and plan a lesson on a specific standard together.” • “I’ve been teaching for 4 years, this is my first time continuously planning lessons with my grade level since being in my teacher credential program.”

  12. What did you learn through planning Direct Instruction Lesson? • “I learned how to plan the lesson in the FAST Framework order. I use to plan the lesson with the learning goal and activity. Now, I start with the student learning goal and then move to outcome.” • “Something that I learned was how to be more intentional about how Ichecks for student understanding throughout the lesson.”

What did you learn through planning Direct Instruction Lesson? • “The most important thing I learned about planning the Direct Instruction lesson was that it is ok to allow my kindergarteners to get up and move around the classroom to check for understanding.” • “I learned that it is important to ask my students the 3 closure questions before allowing them to work on independent practice. • Learning goal • Big Idea • Question on steps

Coaching? • “This Direct Instruction coaching and instructional rounds allowed us (teachers) to develop a common language, common framework from learning goal to big idea.” • “Being able to observe someone else teach, gave me insight into the areas I do well and the areas that I am struggling in.”

What did you learn through delivering Direct Instruction Lesson? • “When I was able to go in to observeI learned great ideas, different approaches and techniques to the same content I was teaching.” • “I knew I nailed it, I felt confident. During the coaching I had positive and constructive feedback from my grade level team.”
