  3. 5 years since graduating with IS Honours • Graduated December 2004 • Employed by Accenture • Co-founded Getwine – online wine sales • Co-founded Gradzone – graduate recruitment • Started Paddocks – specialist property services firm • Started GetSmarter – specialist online training company

  4. What is my current business status? • Getwine selling R1 million in wine every month • Growth of 20% through the recession • Paddocks and GetSmarter operate from the same office; employ 24 people and train over 2,000 students per year • GetSmarter is growing at a rate of 100% every year

  5. Why am I telling you this? • This is just one example of what is possible to achieve if you embrace the UCT Information Systems program

  6. How did IS Honours help me get here? • Effective information systems help companies be competitive • Example: Getwine • 3 hours from order checkout to your door • Internet store allows for national sales • Low staff costs due to automation • By understanding how to create effective info systems, you make yourself employable

  7. How did IS Honours help me get here? • Skills in creating Information Systems empower entrepreneurs • Example: GetSmarter • Created company website to sell courses • Created CRM system to manage marketing, sales and bookkeeping • Created student website to manage teaching

How did IS Honours help me get here? • “Team work makes the dream work” • 3rd and 4th year IS projects develop skills in team work and client service • Only major that allows for extended team work where you are working for a real client • If you use the opportunity wisely, you will understand how to work in a team to add value to a client
