ATTACK ON MONCADA BARRACKS • Began Cuban Revolution • The unsuccessful invasion of rebels • Rebels consisted of lower class people • Led by Fidel and Raul • 120 v. 400 • Unprepared rebels = mistakes losing artillery car, men left behind from lack of weapons, and men leaving car before the were in the barracks • About 60 rebels killed and 40 captured

  3. OPERATION VERANO • 1958 plan to crush Fidel’s army • General Cantillio was put in charge • Batista gave Cantillio 12,000 men • Castro was able to fight the army off Batista and Cantillio thought there were 1,000 to 2,000 rebels, when there were only 300

  4. BATTLE OF LA PLATA • Part of Operation Verano • Successful Cuban landing • Castro planned for attack • Cantillio’s plan back fired Castro was the first to attack with advantage of mountains • Rebels captured 400 of Batista’s army

  5. BATTLE OF LAS MERCEDES • Last battle of Operation Verano • Plan was to lure Castro’s army out of Mountains Surrender and destroy • Fidel’s ambush on retreating Cubans stopped by undetected armies • The war ended with a cease-fire propaganda Gave Fidel a chance to retreat

  6. BATTLE OF YAGUAJAY • Castro’s response attacks to Operation Verano • The army started as sixty, grew to 250 as they advanced to the city • Cuban army = 450-500 men • Camilo Cienfuegos was put in charge of the rebels • Invasions were continually unsuccessful

  7. BATTLE OF SANTA CLARA • Rebels stopped trying to invade Yaguajay, moved on to Santa Clara the next day • Combined forces of Cienfuegos, Guevara, and local revolutionaries moved to Santa Clara • The city was taken within 12 hours after invasion • 3900 v. 340 out numbered • 2900 taken prisoner

  10. CHE GUEVARA • Physician, author, intellectual, guerrilla leader, military theorist, medical student • The head leader of the Battle of Santa Clara • Defeated the Cuban Government • Helped create the land reforms

  11. RAUL CASTRO • President of the Cuban Council of State • President of the Council of Ministers of Cuba • Second Secretary of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba • Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces (Army, Navy, and Air Force).

  12. REBEL SUCCESS • Overthrew the Batistan Government • Changed the government type • Castro came to power • Won the war while highly outnumbered • Gained many followers and pro-revolutionists
