  1. Types of Fuel Cells Hey dudes and dudettes. Fuel cells are alike in some ways and different in other ways. Let’s see how.... basic similarities and differences

  2. Basic Fuel cell Design • http://zebu.uoregon.edu/2001/ph162/fani.gif Fuel cells have this basic design. Click on the link to see a cool animation.

  3. Simplest fuel cell: PEM This diagram illustrates the PEM (polymer electrolyte membrane) type fuel cell. The hydrogen ions pass through the membrane but the electrons travel around it, and they become available to do work such as lighting the bulb. Those poor electrons - they never get a rest!

  4. Functions of Fuel Cell Parts The catalysts are porous , allow transmission of ions, and promote ionization of the hydrogen and oxygen. The catalysts make things go. They’re like the dj at a party!

  5. Input and Output Hydrogen and oxygen are the reactants; water is the product. Reduction, the gain of electrons takes place at the cathode. Oxidation, the loss of electrons takes lace at the anode. This thing doesn’t pollute. It only makes my favorite molecule: water!

  6. Fuel Cells Vary Just as there are different kinds of people, there are different kinds of fuel cells. Just as a jock is different from a nerd, so different types of fuel cells have different jobs

  7. Other types of fuel cells Here are 5 types: AFC, PAFC, MCFC, SOFC, DMFC.

  8. Alkali Fuel Cell The AFC uses KOH as an electrolyte which contributes to the ionization and mobility of the H and O ions. Platinum is used in the electrodes and the cell operates at 300 – 400°F. This was used on Apollo spacecraft. Instead of a membrane this cell uses an electrolyte to free the electrons.

  9. Alkali Fuel Cell AFC’s need very pure hydrogen which makes them cost prohibitive. Leakage is also a concern. This puppy costs big bucks and needs a diaper.

  10. Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell MCFC’s use Na2CO3 or Mg2CO3 as its electrolyte and operates at about 1200˚F. CO2 must be injected with use to replace carbonate ions. These run too hot for home use. This can be cheaper, but it’s kinda hot. The electrolyte is what you find in Tums!

  11. Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cell T

  12. Solid Oxide Fuel Cell

  13. Methanol Fuel Cell
