What is it? Passive house,is a house that doesn't need conventional heating systems; to heat in the cold season it's enough the heat produced by sun, people and the appliances inside it
How does it work 1-Minimize heat losses 2-Maximize heat supplies
Minimize Heat Losses 1-To decrease heat losses by transmission:building the house with materials that have heat transfer coefficient (U) less than 0.15 W/m²K for the outer walls and 0.8 W/m²K for the fixtures. The solar factor of the glass must be more than 50% to continue to benefit from solar energy in winter 2-To decrease heat losses by ventilation:the fresh air supply is ensured by dual flow controlled mechanical ventilation (VMC).To reduce losses related to ventilation, the passive house must be equipped with a heat recover
Maximize Heat Supplies The general heating is mainly based on: - The use of passive solar heating that passes through windows and walls - The use of the heat generated by appliances and people Based on low energy needs of heating, a passive house should be able to operate without conventional heating systems, but with a simple emergency system
The Advantages of Passive House Compared to a traditional building, a "passive house": Represents a significant savings both in energy and costs, provides better thermal comfort and excellent air quality. So while in a classic new home the need of energy for heating purposes (according to the current rules) is up to about 110 kWh per square meter a year, in a passive house this need is reduced to 15 kWh
Hints about Passive Houses The concept of the passive house was born in May 1988 from the collaboration between the swedish Bo Adamson and the german Wolfgang Feist. Passive houses are spread mainly in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands and other Northern European countries. In Italy too there are now so many experiences. In Austria, in 2015, the passive house standard will be required for all buildings. In the Austrian state of Vorarlberg is mandatory since 1 January 2007.
