  2. Today’s Focus You’ll remember from previous years of grammar that adverbs can pass the test of movability. That is, they can be moved around within the sentence without changing the meaning of the sentence. If I study hard, I will pass this test. I will pass this test if I study hard.   3. Comma Rules with Adverb Clauses: Adverb clauses used as introductory clauses, are always followed by commas: Because I love stories, I read. Adverb clauses used later in the sentence are only separated by a comma if they express a contrasting idea. I read because I love stories. I read, even though I hate stories. Adverb clauses used in the middle of a sentence usually interrupt the writer’s flow of thought; if so, they should be set off with commas. I, because I love stories, read. Use this structure cautiously in your writing. Great writers can use this technique to great advantage for sophisticated structure, but used incorrectly, a writer can simply create an awkward sentence. Digital Textbook Images from Writer's Inc.

  4. Introducing… • Adverb clauses begin with subordinating conjunctions. You can find a complete list in your Writer’s INC book, but there is a memory device to help you remember the most commonly used ones. • www.asia@becauseThis isn’t really a web address, but if you use it to remember these subordinating conjunctions, you’ll easily recognize them: when, where, while, as, since, if, although, and because.   5. Remember that an adverb clause is actually an adverb. • It’s just a longer one made up of a group of words. • By the way, most adverb clauses will modify the verb of the sentence. Adverbs that modify other modifiers are usually intensifiers. We won’t cover those in this class. I will study for the test shortly.   7. Adverb Clauses • Write two complex sentences using at least one adverb clause. Try making them answer different adverb questions. • Now use the test of move-ability to rearrange the sentences. Determine which way feels most powerful to you. Does it matter? Remember your punctuation!  • Note the difference: • I do not like to talk when I am tired from the day’s work. • When I am tired from the day’s work, I do not like to talk.
