  5. What do you know about our Planet?(Write some on board) • Earth is the only planet on which water can exist in liquid form on the surface. • Earth is referred to as the BLUE PLANET. WHY? • Earth is 24,900 miles around the equator. How fast are we moving? • Earth travels through space at 66,700 miles per hour.

  6. Amazing Earth How far is it to the center of the Earth? • The distance from the surface of Earth to the center is about 3,963 miles (6,378 kilometers). Much of Earth is fluid. How thick is the crust that we live on? • The mostly solid skin of the planet is only 41 miles (66 kilometers) thick -- thinner than the skin of an apple, relatively speaking.

  7. Amazing Earth • What is the hottest place on Earth? • Count one wrong if you guessed Death Valley in California. True enough on many days. But El Azizia in Libya recorded a temperature of 136 degrees Fahrenheit (57.8 Celsius) on Sept. 13, 1922 -- the hottest ever measured. In Death Valley, it got up to 134 Fahrenheit on July 10, 1913.

  8. Amazing Earth • What two great American cities are destined to merge? • The San Andreas fault, which runs north-south, is slipping at a rate of about 2 inches (5 centimeters) per year, causing Los Angeles to move towards San Francisco. Scientists forecast LA will be a suburb of the City by the Bay in about 15 million years.

  10. What do we know? • Why many find science exciting. • How much we really know. • Ways of learning and discovering. • Retaining information - how much? • Practice - for life outside of school. • Values and Responsibility.

  11. Time for Thinkers… • Questioning (science) • Don't believe everything you hear or read • Think for yourself • Take responsibility for your actions • Strive to be a leader rather than follower • Stand up for what is right even though it may not be the “popular” thing to do.

  12. Rules of the Game • Integrity of a wheel • Following School Rules • Tardies / Cell Phones • Cheating / Plagiarism • Rules & Procedures (next slides)

  13. Rules & Procedures

  14. Be in your assigned seat Before the bell. Use appropriate language at all times. Raise your hand for permission to speak. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself. Do your own work (no copying others). Rules

  15. Begin the Warm-Up after entering the classroom. Show mutual respect and listen when other students or the teacher are speaking to the class. Remain in your seats until the teacher dismisses you at the end of the period. Leave the classroom clean by picking up any paper or trash off the floor and not writing on desks. Be responsible for finding out what you missed when you are absent and getting make-up assignments. Procedures

  16. Discipline • School has it’s own consequences • See student handbook • For General Classroom Rules: • Warnings = Talk with Teacher after class • Detention = Calling Home • Referrals = Sent to Office

  17. Grading A: 90-100% B: 80-90% C: 70-80% D: 60-70% = passing F: 0-60% = not passing (Give examples) Essentially, if you attend everyday, do what you are asked and turn in assignments when they are due, you should have no problem passing this class. However, if your overall grade ever drops to an F, you will be required to come in once a week (when?) for tutoring until you get back up to a passing grade.

  18. Technology • Teacher Web Site: http://libertyunion.schoolwires.net/sierraj • Please see me if you are not familiar with using computers

  19. Be Prepared Bring Everyday: • Pens/Pencils • Binder Paper (Keep in Binder) • Textbooks – we got a class set! • Positive attitude • Readiness to learn and succeed • Willingness to challenge your thinking
