GUIDING QUESTION:“Where are we in 1877, and what shaped and guided us to @1890? • What was the US population in 1877? • How much of that total population was immigrant and/or Native American? • Where did the majority of people live? • What areas of the US were not states? • Where was the majority of wealth located?

  3. America in Transition: 1877-1890 • 38,555,983 was the total population of the United States in 1870. • 4,880,009 were former slaves or children born to former slaves • 5, 567, 229 (14.4%) were immigrants • New York--419, 094 immigrants
