  2. The BLG aka The Big Lofty Goal • To promote and incorporate the broad areas of learning (BAL) as prescribed by the ministry of education • To empower teachers to see themselves as “designers of learning”

  3. Broad Areas of Learning

  4. Why is this important? • In our opinion and upon reflection the BAL are why we teach and what are we want for our students.

  5. Our Concerns • The broad areas of learning are being over looked when developing course work. • Broad areas of learning are being overshadowed by outcomes. • We are weighed down by specifics of curriculum.

  6. What learners need and want • Who is a learner? • For the purposes of this presentation and in the spirit of the broad areas of learning (life long learning) all people have the potential to be learners, students and teachers alike. • To achieve the goal of incorporating the broad areas of learning, learners need skills in: • Critical thinking • Communication • Collaboration • Creativity

  7. What does the research and supporting documents say? • Kay and Greenhill’s book; The Leaders Guide to 21st Century Education • Students need to be prepared for the realities and challenges of the 21st century. • The 4c’s • Sharon Friesen: What did you do in school today? Teaching Effectiveness: A Framework and Rubric • Viewing teachers as designers of learning rather than deliverers of curriculum.

  8. What does the research and supporting documents say? Continued. • Saskatchewan Ministry of Education. (2010). 2010 Saskatchewan Curriculum, Renewed Curricula: Understanding Outcomes. • “Three Broad Areas of Learning provide a conceptual foundation for the renewal of curricula, and encompass and build upon the provincial Goals of Education”

  9. Next weeks teaser:the project to come • Get in pairs • One person think of an animal. While the other thinks of an inanimate object. • Share the animal and object with each other. • Combine the two to create the name of a pub. • Create a background story for how the pub got its name.
