  1. Math 5Unit Review Instructor: Mrs. Tew Turner

  2. In this lesson we will review for the unit assessment and learn test taking strategies.

  3. Math Warm-up Add. Look for shortcuts. 9/10 +1/2 + 2/3 + 1/10 + 1/2

  4. Math Warm-up - ANSWER Add. Look for shortcuts. 9/10 + 1/2 + 2/3 + 1/10 + 1/2 (9/10 + 1/10) + (1/2 + 1/2) + (2/3) 2 2/3

  5. In this unit you learned about geometry. Today we will review all that you have learned, as well as go over test taking strategies.

  6. Vocabulary Review Polygon – is a closed plane figure made up of line segments. Regular polygon – a polygon that has sides of equal length and angles of equal measure.

  7. Vocabulary Review Line segment – is part of line and has 2 endpoints. Plane– a plane is an endless flat surface.

  8. Vocabulary Review Equilateral triangle – All sides are equal. Isosceles triangle – Two sides are the same length. Scalene triangle – No sides are the same length. Right triangle – One angle is a right angle(90º).

  9. Vocabulary Review Acute triangle – All 3 angles are acute angles (less than 90º). Obtuse triangle – One angle is an obtuse angle (greater than 90º).

  10. Vocabulary Review Quadrilateral – A quadrilateral is any polygon with 4 sides. Parallelogram – both pairs of opposite sides parallel and equal in length. Trapezoid– only 1 pair of parallel sides. Rectangle – a parallelogram with 4 right angles.

  11. Vocabulary Review Rhombus– a parallelogram with all sides the same length. Square– A rectangle with all sides the same length. A square can also be called a rhombus. Generalization – A generalization can be made based on rules.

  12. Vocabulary Review coordinate plane- is a flat surface formed by two intersecting, perpendicular lines. Each of these lines is called an axis. x-axis- The horizontal line. y-axis- The vertical line.

  13. Vocabulary Review Quadrants-The x-axis and the y-axis divide the coordinate plane into four areas. These areas are calledquadrants. Ordered Pairs- Digits that indicate where a point is located on a coordinate grid. Ex: (3,2)

  14. Vocabulary Review x-coordinate- The first number in an ordered pair. It is graphed on the x-axis. y-coordinate- The second number in an ordered pair. It is graphed on the y-axis.

  15. Vocabulary Review Area – the amount of surface it covers X =AREA estimation - to give an approximate value rather than an exact answer

  16. Vocabulary Review fraction – a symbol, such as ¾, used to describe one or more parts of a whole that is divided into equal parts. A fraction can name a part of a whole, a part of a set, a location on a number line, or a division of whole numbers.

  17. Vocabulary Review factors - numbers that are multiplied to get a product 7 × 7 = 49 product - the number that is the result of multiplying two or more factors 7 × 7 = 49

  18. Vocabulary-Review geometric solid- a figure that has three dimensions and takes up space polyhedron – another name for a 3-D figure, which means ‘many faces’

  19. Vocabulary-Review face – the flat sides of a solid edges – connects the faces of solids vertices - corners that connect the corners of a solid

  20. Vocabulary-Review volume- the number of cubic units needed to fill a solid figure (measured as u3) cubic unit – the volume of a cube that measures 1 unit on each edge

  21. Vocabulary-Review rectangular prism- A solid (3-dimensional) object which has six faces that are rectangles prism – solid with two congruent parallel bases and faces that are parallelograms

  22. Vocabulary-Review depth – extent downward or backward or inward; "the depth of the water"; "depth of a shelf"; "depth of a closet"

  23. Understanding 2-Dimensional Shapes Review

  24. A polygon is a closed plane figure made up of straight line segments. There are 2 types of polygons: Regular polygons Irregular polygons

  25. Observe the regular polygons on the following slide. What makes them regular?

  26. Regular Polygon Examples

  27. What makes them regular polygons? ANSWER • All their sides are equal length. • All the interior angles have the same measurements.

  28. Observe the irregular polygons on the following slide. What makes them irregular?

  29. Irregular Polygon Examples

  30. What makes them irregular polygons? ANSWER • All their sides are not equal length. 2. Some of the interior angles have different measurements.

  31. Classifying 2 Dimensional Shapes Review

  32. Let’s review classifying quadrilaterals by revisiting this website • http://www.mathsisfun.com/quadrilaterals.html

  33. In this lesson we continued to explore how to categorize shapes based on their common properties. • You need to remember the properties of shapes and how they are categorized. Review the content of this lesson as many times as you need. There is so much vocabulary in geometry!

  34. Coordinate Planes and Real World Problems Review

  35. Coordinate Grids help to locate points or destinations. We need to follow the x-axis, then the y-axis. This is used in locating places on a map and used to describe exact locations with a grid.

  36. In your Math Notebook Independent Practice Using the coordinate grid, which ordered pair represents the location of the School?

  37. On a map, coordinates are given in degrees of longitude and latitude. (longitude, latitude)

  38. (longitude, latitude) Longitude = north or south (x-axis) Latitude = east or west (y-axis)

  39. Find the longitude and latitude of Jackson, Mississippi.

  40. In your Math Notebook Find the longitude and latitude of Jackson, Mississippi. about 90o W, 32o N

  41. What city is located near 85° W, 38° N?

  42. What city is located near 85° W, 38° N? Frankfort, Kentucky

  43. Calculating Area with Fractional Side Lengths Review

  44. We used multiplying fractions in finding the area of rectangles with fractional lengths. We learned how to model the fractional parts with square units to understand how the multiplication and division of fractions are related.

  45. In your Math Notebook Independent Practice Draw an area model for each of the following lengths: • 1/3 x 5/6 = • 3/4 x 2/5 = • 1/3 x 4/9 =

  46. Answer KeyHow to Draw the Model • 1/3 x 5/6 = 5/18 5/6 1/3

  47. How to Draw the Model • 2. 3/4 x 2/5 = 6/20 2/5 3/4

  48. How to Draw the Model • 3. 1/3 x 4/9 = 4/27 4/9 1/3

  49. Attributes of 3-D Figures Review

  50. Geometric solids are 3 dimensional figures that have faces, edges, and vertices.
