  2. In this lesson we will review for the unit assessment and learn about test taking strategies.

  3. Math Warm-up Use a drawing to help you solve this problem. A frog is at the bottom of an 8 foot well. Every day he crawls up 3 feet, but at night he slips down 2 feet. How many days will it take for him to get out of the well?

  5. In this unit you learned about place value, decimals, patterns in the base 10 number system, and representing place value with exponents. Today we will review all that you have learned, as well as go over test taking strategies.

  6. Place Value Review

  7. Do you remember this place value chart? Let’s review the place values in order.

  8. What is the value of digit 8 in 2,397,823? What is the place of digit 8? What is the value of digit 2? What is the place of digit 2?

  9. Decimal Review

  10. Do you remember this part of the place value chart? It shows the decimal places. Let’s read them together.

  11. Read this number: 1.982 You say, “One AND Nine hundred eighty two thousandths.” Remember that you say AND for the decimal point. The decimal part is read with a ‘THS’ at the end.

  12. Now lets work on recognizing and saying these numbers. Why are they less than one? 0.04 = Four Hundredths = this means you have 4 out of 100 items = 4/100 0.3 = Three Tenths = this means you have 3 out of 10 items = 3/10

  13. Rounding Decimals Review

  14. How do you round 1.47 to the nearest tenth? Step 1 Find the rounding place. 1.47 (We are rounding to the nearest tenth, so underline the tenths place.)

  15. How do you round 1.47 to the nearest tenth? Step 2 Look at the digit to the right of the rounding place 1.47 (We are rounding to the nearest tenth, so we circle the thousandths place.)

  16. How do you round 1.47 to the nearest tenth? Step 3 If the digit to the right of the rounding digit is less than 5, then leave the rounding digit. If the digit is 5 or greater, then add one to the rounding digit. 1.47 would be 1.50 (The digit we are looking at is 7, which is greater than 5. We would change the rounding digit to a 5.)

  17. How do you round 1.47 to the nearest tenth? Step 4 *This is where it is different than rounding whole numbers.* Drop the digits to the right of the rounding digit. 1.50 = 1.5 (We dropped the digit in the thousandths place.)

  28. Patterns in Base 10 Review

  29. As you move to the right in the base 10 system, the place is divided by 10. As you move to the left in the base 10 system, the place is multiplied by 10. We can use this information to answer questions such as “how many thousands are in 10 millions?”

  34. The exponent tells you how many times you multiply the base times itself. 10 base: 10 exponent: 2 10 x 10 (the base times itself 2 times) 2
