Core Functions • Promote and provide training on cultural competency to improve access to health services for racial ethnic minorities. • Provide relevant statistical data to assess and identify health status of racial ethnic minorities. • Increase awareness of major health problems of racial ethnic minorities and factors that influence health.

  4. Core Functions • Identify needs and expand community-based health promotion and disease prevention outreach efforts. • Establish and strengthen, networks, coalitions, and partnerships to identify and address health problems. • Collaborate with public health partners to develop and promote programs and practices to achieve health equity.

  5. Nebraska Population • Mid 1990s: US Census bureau projected that Nebraska’s minority populations would reach a high of 15% of the total population by 2025. • 2005:20 years ahead of the projection, the racial ethnic minority population of Nebraska was estimated to be 14.6%. • 2000-2010: Nebraska’s racial ethnic minority population grew 50% from 214,152 to 517,110. • 2010: Nebraska’s racial ethnic minority population accounted for 17.9% of the total population.

Examples of Funding • Funding: Minority Health Initiative Funding ($1.58 million annually)- Priority Issues…. • Cardiovascular disease • Obesity • Diabetes • Infant mortality • Asthma • Every Woman Matters • Native American Public Health Act • Maternal Child Health • State Partnership Grant • Distributed on per-capita basis to counties with minority populations of ≥ 5% • 44 counties qualified for funding for 2011-2013 cycle

People are People are People: Increasing Your CQ (aka “P3 Training”) • 7 modules = 2 full days • Opportunity & Overalls; Again, & Again, & Again; A Picture = 1,000 Numbers; Thin Slicing; Blind Men & Elephants; Loose Labels; Bows and Ribbons • Modules can be done in any order or configuration • Expanded training on individual topics • Tailored to needs of the organization
