  2. General Assembly • Main governing body • 51 nations represented at the beginning, now there is currently 193 nations represented • 6 main committees • Establish policies, receive reports, approve budgets

  3. Security Council • Meets for international emergencies • 5 permanent members, each with veto power over any decision (Russia, Britain, France, China, USA) • 10 other members elected for 2-year terms • May recommend sanctions against countries in conflict or send in a peacekeeping force

  4. International Court of Justice • Also known as the “World Court” • 15 judges, selected by the General Assembly and Security Council, serve for 9 years • Sits at the Hague in the Netherlands • Hears cases brought by nations, not individuals

  5. Trusteeship • Formed to speed up the end of colonialism • 5 permanent members form Security Council • Work ended in 1994, and disbanded

  6. Secretariat • Largest UN body • Supports and administers programmes of other UN bodies • Headed by Secretary- General (currently Ban Ki-Moon from Korea) • 163 officials around the world with 25,000 employees

  7. Economic and Social Council • 18 members elected each year for a 3-year term; total of 54 members • Co-ordinates economic and social programmes to combat poverty, disease, food, water, and energy shortages, pollution and unemployment • Works with: FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization), ILO (International Labour Organization), IMP (International Monetary Fund), UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization), UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund), and various NGO’s (non-governmental organizations)
