Established in 1945 following WWII, the United Nations (U.N.) is an international organization based in New York City. Its mission is to promote peace, security, and economic development among nations. The U.N. comprises several components, including the powerful Security Council, which has five permanent members with veto power: the USA, China, France, Great Britain, and Russia. The U.N. also engages in humanitarian efforts, supports democratic elections in developing nations, and upholds human rights principles through its General Assembly.
