Cellular Respiration: Energy Production and Exercise

Learn about cellular respiration, the process of converting glucose into ATP, the Krebs Cycle and Electron Transport Chain, and how exercise affects energy production. Find out how many calories are in 1 gram of glucose and explore the different types of energy produced. Discover the impact of exercise intensity on energy consumption through a quick lab experiment.

  1. Chapter 9 Cellular Respiration

  2. What is a calorie? What is cellular respiration? What is the Krebs Cycle and ETC? What are the kinds of energy? Chapter 9 Essential Questions

  3. How many calories are there in 1 gram of glucose? 3.811 calories of heat energy. Question of the Day

  4. What is a calorie and how is it measured? A unit of metabolic energy Energy needed to raise 1g H2O 1O C for nutrition and food labelling "calorie" refers to RDA calorie How many calorie’s in RDA Diet? 2000 9-1 Chemical Energy & Food

  5. Occurs in heterotrophs’ cytoplasm & mitochondria CR is Energy released from glucose using O2 Exact Opposite of photosynthesis What is the equation? C6H12O6 + 6 O2 -> 6 CO2 +6 H2O + Energy Cellular Respiration (CR)

  6. 1st stage: Glycolysis 2nd stage: Krebs Cycle 3rd stage: Electron Transport Chain All 3 produce ATP 3 Stages of CR

  7. Glyco = glucose Lysis = split Process - Glucose (6 Carbon) broken into 2 pyruvic acid (3 Carbon) Produces ATP & NADH (from ADP & NAD+) Goes to Krebs Cycle Glycolysis

  8. 2 Pyruvic Acids (Pyruvate) come in from Glycolysis Each breaksdown into CO2 Produces ATP & NADH, FADH2 (ENERGY) (full charged battery) From ADP & NAD+ (1/2 charged battery) Energy goes to Electron Transport Chain (ETC) Krebs Cycle

  9. Moves electrons along mitochondria membrane (carrying ATP, NADH, FADH2) Takes electrons w/energy from Krebs Cycle Electron drops off Energy to be used by cell to do work Electron Transport Chain

  10. Fermentation -Energy produced w/o oxygen Can produce 2 kinds Alcoholic - yeast uses up all O2, still makes ATP (beer & wine) Lactic Acid - builds up during exercise b/c not breathing enough O2 Cellular Respiration w/o Oxygen

  11. Total # of ATP for 1 gram of glucose is: 36 ATP Quick, Intense exercise requires ATP produced in oxygen deficit (lactic acid - Sprinters) Longer, less strenuous exercise uses stored energy with oxygen, glycogen Energy and Exercise

  12. What is the most intense exercise activity, using most energy? Short, high intensity uses most energy Wrestling Question of the Day

  13. Quick Lab: Cell Respiration Bromothymol Blue Quick Lab for Exercise
