Degree Programs in Science and law politics, public policy business, etc. (Science + Business ) Science Trained Professionals in Society Focused Professional Science Degrees (MS in focused science Research specialty) Specialized Applied Science Research Academic Research Degrees in Science (Ph.D. in Science) Academic and Research Careers

  3. Characteristics of Degree Programs 1. There should be an identifiable scientific niche that will generate interest by students and faculty, with strong support from the corporate/industrial sector. 2. There should be existing faculty interest, enthusiasm, and expertise in a specialty area representing at least one science discipline for which the MS degree is not now a primary professional option.

  4. Meets industrial needs for relevantly educated workforce (provides intellectual capital in scientific and technological areas). 4. The focused science specialty area could be interdisciplinary, or at least represent a non-traditional disciplinary focus with existing faculty expertise on campus. The degree is named for the specialty area and not for the disciplines involved.

  5. 5. The degree program could be completed in • less than two years with no thesis (but with • possible internships in summer). There • should already be a reasonable number of • existing courses for the program. • minimal overhead • easily created and changed • tuition supported professional degree • (differential tuitions) (currently 1.6 x)

HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION (Computing; Psychology; Literature, Communication, and Culture) (started in Fall of 1997) BIOINFORMATICS (Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Mathematics,) (started in Fall of 1999) QUANTITATIVE COMPUTATIONAL FINANCE (Mathematics, Management, Industrial & Systems Engineering) (started in Fall of 2000) PROSTHETICS AND ORTHOTICS (Applied Physiology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering) (started in Fall of 2002)

Degree Program I • HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION • Involves Computing (GVU lab), Engineering Psychology, and • technical communications (LCC) • Involves graphics, usability, and human/computer interface • issues. • Began in Fall of 1997- Currently 45 students in program with 31 • graduates in 2003 and 2004. 20-25 new students expected each Fall • Large industrial interest and support (Computer manufacturers, • Software companies, Computer service organizations). Recent • graduates have jobs at IBM, Dell, Panasonic, Siemens Research, • Oraclehttp://www.cc.gatech.edu/gvu/education/degree.html

Degree Program II • BIOINFORMATICS • Involves Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Mathematics • Involves computational issues involved in large bioscience • datasets (e.g., gene sequences). • Program started in Fall of 1999 (expect 20 new students a year) • 32 students currently, with 25 graduates in 2003 & 2004 • Large industrial interest and support (Biotech companies, • pharmaceutical companies). Recent graduates have jobs at GlaxoSmithKline, Los Alamos Natl. Labs., Toronto Children’s Hospital, Vanderbilt Genome Center http://www.biology.gatech.edu/bioinformatics/

Degree Program III • QUANTITATIVE-COMPUTATIONAL FINANCE • Involves Mathematics, Management, and Industrial & Systems • Engineering • Mathematical modeling in finance industry. • Program started in Fall of 2000 (72 students currently in program • and 54 graduates in 2003 & 2004. 25-30 students expected each fall. • Established QCF Computer lab in French Building • Large industrial interest and support (banks, investment • companies, and other financial institutions). Recent graduates hold • positions at ING Investment Management, Cinergy, Kensington • Partners, Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank, Silverback Asset Mgt. • http://www.qcf.gatech.edu/

Degree Program IV • PROSTHETICS AND ORTHOTICS • Involves Applied Physiology, Mechanical Engineering, and • Electrical & Computer Engineering • Biomechanics of lower limb prosthetics. • Program started in Fall of 2002 (18 students; 8 additional • students in fall; First 5 graduates in 2004). • Established P&O clinical lab in Weber Building (just opened) • Clinical practicum (2nd year) at clinical settings • Large industrial interest and support (Prosthetics • industry, rehabilitation medicine; $500,000 dollars worth of • equipment donated to clinical lab). http://www.ap.gatech.edu/mspo/
