    2. Training Objectives Understand how SRI assesses reading comprehension and helps target, monitor, and group students. Gain an overview and experience using SRI from a students perspective. Interpret data reports and discuss ways to use them to monitor progress and guide instruction. Use the teacher management system (SAM) to customize SRI, generate reports and search for books within lexile ranges. Be able to take back to your schools this information to share with your teachers.

    10. What is SRI? SRI is a research-based, computer-adaptive assessment for Grades 3-12 that measures students levels of reading comprehension and reports results using the Lexile Framework for Reading.

    30. The Lexile Framework for Reading Scientific, objective measurement of reading comprehension Developed over the course of 40 years by researchers to improve reading Places reader and text on the same scale A common scale benefits teachers across grades, and administrators because it gives everyone a common language in which to express results and set goals. The Lexile Framework was developed by leading researchers through Federal National Institute of Health and Human Development grants as an objective measure of reading, both comprehension and complexity. That means the scale relates to how well somebody reads as well as the difficulty of the reading material. Today, the Lexile Framework is the most widely adopted scale on reading materials and in interpreting reading test scores. It is important to note that SRI was a result of bringing the measurement expertise of MetaMetrics (the developers of the Lexile Scale) with the reading expertise of Scholastic. Ultimately, the Scholastic Reading Inventory was developed and deployed to be the first, most efficient, actionable assessment of reading comprehension. 36. District/School Proficiency Reports For the school or district administrator, there are Leadership Reports that allow them to see quickly and visually who is meeting the standards and who is not. This report shows the numbers of students at each proficiency level . This data can also be disaggregated on all of the NCLB sub categories. _____________________________ Scholastic Reading Inventory gives educators powerful data export tools to disaggregate data for the accountability purposes and ensure achievement for all students. Transfer all your Scholastic Reading Inventory data into a spreadsheet program, such as Excel, for further analysis, as per the NCLB guidelines. Scholastic Reading Inventory allows you to capture and export not only student testing data, but also classifications of ethnicity, and student affiliation with subgroups and various special programs. 38. As we discussed earlier, a unique and valuable component of SRI is that it use the Lexile Framework, thus providing a continuous scale that has meaning throughout a students academic career. This means we can compare where a student is performing in Lexiles today with where they were two years ago and speak about the difference as growth, very much the same way we can speak about height growth in inches. The Scholastic Reading Inventory Growth Report measures reading progress during a specific time period by comparing student scores for any two testing sessions. You can view the selected student, group or class and immediately see the change in performance as reflected in the Lexile score. Many uses for this report include sharing with administrators to evaluate curriculum effectiveness. 41. Differentiating Instruction For the teacher who works with a set of materials the ability to quickly identify strong and weak students is crucial to overall success. The Intervention Grouping Report, here the on screen, helps the teacher to quickly and visually determine those students that require differentiated instruction. This is one of many reports that can lead to immediate change in instructional behaviors that will lead to improved student performance. For the teacher who works with a set of materials the ability to quickly identify strong and weak students is crucial to overall success. 42. Class Growth

    43. Student Growth Goals The Student Yearly Progress Indicator allows you to monitor students progress over time and compare their performance against grade-level proficiency ranges. This reports helps teachers and administrators assess overall performance and identify students not meeting grade-level expectations. The general expectation is we improve over time. This example shows one student beginning the year below the grade at the cusp of proficiency (walking the fine line between basic and proficient) and finishing the year in the middle of the scale. 44. Read for Life Report We all know how important literacy skills are inside the classroom, but as more and more research is conducted that shows the literacy skills required to function successfully outside the classroom, SRI provides a report that plots a students SRI score against various types of real-world texts so teachers can stress to their students the importance of improving their reading skills. The average Lexile range for an 11th grader is somewhere between 1025L and 1125L. You can see from this report however, that a college application is about a 1500L. Kids that want to apply to college are required to read texts at higher Lexiles than their reading abilities and this is true in many real-world situations including college and careers. We all know how important literacy skills are inside the classroom, but as more and more research is conducted that shows the literacy skills required to function successfully outside the classroom, SRI provides a report that plots a students SRI score against various types of real-world texts so teachers can stress to their students the importance of improving their reading skills. 45. School-Home Connection Finally, Scholastic Reading Inventory provides a way to communicate with parents that can translate into action at home. The Parent Letter is a personalized note to the parents or guardians of a student that summarizes the results of a testing session. The letter introduces Scholastic Reading Inventory to caregivers, provides them with an overview of their childs progress, and offers several useful suggestions for helping and encouraging their child to build fundamental reading skills. The letter is available in English and Spanish. This report is ideal to send to parents after a testing session (along with the childs personalized reading list) or share it with them during parent/teacher conferences. Finally, Scholastic Reading Inventory provides a way to communicate with parents that can translate into action at home. 50. I want to leave you with a few key points. For us at Scholastic, success is measured in terms that are much harder to measure than a mere test. Success is the change in performance of students. We are your partner in helping students to succeed. To that end, I welcome any and all questions you may have regarding how Scholastic can help meet the goals of _______________. I want to leave you with a few key points.
