Goals for EOL Project • To identify gaps in EOL training during the clinical and pre-clinical years • To generate interest, curiosity, and excitement in palliative and end of life care • To enhance EOL education at the University of Wisconsin Medical School through several different learning forums

  3. Current EOL Resources • Healer’s Art Elective • M2 Pharm Lectures on Pain Management • M2 Neoplasia Lecture on Palliative Care • M3 Core Day on Death and Communicating Bad News • M4 Palliative Care Rotation (evolving)

  4. Partnerships for EOL Projects • Motivated fellow 3rd year students • Unsuspecting 2nd year students who can help coordinate logistics • Dr. Carl Weston, Administrative Medical Director Madison Hospice and 2007 Class Mentor • Dr. Jim Cleary, Educational Director Madison Hospice, UW Med School Faculty and UW Hospital Oncologist

  5. Project Overview • Student Survey/Assessment • EOL noon-series overview for 1st and 2nd year students • EOL seminar/intensive for interested 1st and 2nd year students • 3rd and 4th year EOL curriculum planning committee

Student Survey/Assessment Who: 1st and 2nd year medical students What: A 5-10 minute survey to evaluate student’s beliefs on death, the physician’s role on death and dying and EOL ethics When: During Fall Orientation Where: Wherever that takes place Why: To generate interest and thought on EOL education, to assess whether an intensive program or general lecture series might be more effective

  7. EOL Noon-Series • A 2-3 part series which will take place in September -Part 1: “To Live Until I Die Video” -Part 2: Intro to Hospice and EOL Care • Will coordinate with the integrative medicine interest group • Lectures given by hospice physicians

  8. EOL Seminar/Intensive • EOL seminar will involve 15-30 students and 5 sessions. Topics covered will reflect student survey but will most likely include discussions in some of these areas: -Exploring student’s beliefs surrounding death -Ethical issues in EOL care -Advance directives -Nutrition and EOL care -CAM and non-traditional care -Spiritual and mental health care at EOL -Physical symptoms and care for patients actively dying • Concluding this workshop/minicourse students will have an opportunity to tour the residential hospice facility and meet with hospice staff over dinner • Interested students will also have the opportunity to sign-up for volunteer training

Enhancing 3rd and 4th year EOL Education • To help improve EOL education during the 3rd and 4th years I plan to: 1) Serve as the student representative for the M3 Death, Dying, and Communication Core Day planning committee 2) Serve as the student representative for the M4 Palliative Care Rotation planning committee
